I have a 49 8N, fresh rebuilt engine. Was mowing the pasture the other day and it just quit. No sputter, no warning. It has 12V neg ground wiring kit, Pertronix points delete, all stock after that. Acts like no spark condition. Has anyone had Pertronix go out? Any way to test coil?
Appreciate any ideas.

Electronic ignition are known to go bad out of the clear blue. My self the only things I will have that on is lawn mowers and cars and trucks but NEVER on a tractor. I've replaced at least ten of those over the years and put point back in

Make sure there is voltage going to the coil from the Ignition switch. If voltage, pull the high voltage coil wire from the distributor, and hold it close to a ground (block) In heutral, crank the engine to see if sparks are created. (dry cloths pins work to keep from getting bitten) If spark, the problem is with the distribution Cap/rotor/wires. If no spark. hook a volt meter to the distributor side of the coil and watch the voltage as you crank it. If no pulse in the voltage, suspect wiring to the Pertronix, or the unit itself. Pertronix answers the phone. Jim

I have to agree with you about that. Long as I can get some sort of quality points, not made in china, I would rather have them.

Problem there is guys that brag all the time about how long they can make a set of points last? Yer gonna kill points. If they can't sell em at a profit they will stop making them! And Blue Streak/Standard? They are made in Poland.

For the OP? Do you checks as suggested. Don't be ready to toss the EI until you have done the trouble shooting and know 100% certain that it's to blame. I've seen coils go like that too. And modern coils? Well there are good ones and there are cheap ones. Who knows whats on your tractor.

I had a coil short out internally and that in turn killed the Petronix. One of my tractor pulling buds had a Petronix go with out warning at a tractor pull couple of years ago also. I have them in several of my pulling tractors, but I still carry a everything I need to revert back to the points and condenser if I have to. Nothing is fool proof or will last for ever.

So i pulled the distributor, yanked out the Pertronix, put in new base plate, found a coil on the shelf, new points and condenser and she fired. She's back and running.
Thank you all!
