seeding you acres

I have around 14/15 acres of grass. normally when it gets 5/6 inches tall I mow it with a finish mower or brushhog. would I be better to let it get higher as I have noticed that if I miss a patch and it grows hi it has what looks like seeds on it so I am wondering if I should let it get higher in the spring so maybe it might help re seed it self. don't cut for hay or have any livestock. really don't want to put anything on it to grow faster as I just enjoy it for open pastures. thanks for reading

I have a woods lot and small field that I let seed out each year. It does help keep the grass thick and choke out weeds to let it seed out.

I have a 4 acre patch that I mow 3, or 4 times a year. This year with all the rain I mowed it on Memorial day. It was over my shoulders in a most places. Looked fantastic after it was mowed; but I have a HQ JD bush hog that does a nice job. Anyway let it go to seed once & a while; then You will find out it will re-seed itself for the most part! Next time I mow will probably be before next week is out; then mid - late August, & right after 1st day of fall; but before October starts.

That is a open question because you did not mention what kind of grass we are talking about.

For a lawn it is useless because most lawn grass is a hybrid.
The seed will not grow true to the parent.
And mowing controls weeds also.
If the grass is going to seed the weeds are going to seed also.

If you are dealing with just a native wild grass from your area that only spreads by seed then by all means let it go to seed and grow long enough for the seed to mature. This means mowing only once a year in the fall to cut any trees that may have started to sprout.

What kind of grass is it? Some grasses thicken up from the roots instead of from seed. Brome grass tends to thicken up if it is left to grow tall and go to seed. Blue grass will thicken up even if it is mowed short. Letting grass grow taller will produce a heavier mat of clippings and possibly windrowing from a whirler mower. I have some brome grass waterways I cut for hay just at pollination or before pollination. Blue grass is starting to creep in because brome doesnt compete well with blue when the brome is cut short. In the long run the best thing you can do to thicken it up is to fertilize. Grass likes lots of nitrogen. 50 to 70 pounds of actual N per acre will make a big difference.
