Chrysler slant six in farm equipment?

I watched a Youtube video yesterday about
the slant six. The guy said it was used in
a lot of industrial applications. I was
wondering if the slant six found its way
into farm equipment.

The Chrysler 225 ci slant six is probably one of the best engines ever made by man or beast. Don't know which ag applications exist but there were a few, irrigation pumps is one that I know about.

Case used the slant 6 and 318 V8 in combines and windrowers. Hesston also used the 225 slant six in it's swathers. That engine was also used a lot on irrigation pumps. NI used a Chevy 292 six as one of their options in the Uni-System.

I believe that was in the JD 800 swather as well. Massey and gleaner combines used Chevy motors, the 510 Massey had either the 327 or 350. Oliver and white combines used Chrysler engines too. Owatona and versitile swathers used Ford engines. Some of the versatile 4x4 tractors uses Ford v8 engines too.

Yup, the JD 800 used em.

had a farmer here that put the flathead plymouth in farmall F-20 or F-14, can't remember which, later switched to slant 6.

FMC green pea/lima bean combines used the slant six. When we moved our twelve combines between fields, the kids operating them would throw a steak, and a potato, wrapped in tin foil, on the manifold, and cook it for dinner.

Massey grain swather is slant six powered and my JD swather that I cut hay is also slant six Chrysler powered.

My sister had one in her first used car, a Duster.

I have one in my swather, a JD 800.

Back in the 70's I almost bought a Duster with one, four barrel carb, headers and dual exhaust. Back when 6's in cars were made fun of....it did have some get up and go, tho. Jacked up with 50's on the back!

One of the Minneapolis moline combines used the slant 6. If I remember correctly it was the 2890 combine. Some of the bigger Minneapolis Moline combines at that time used the 318 Chrysler.

I know a guy that has 2 swathers with the slant 6 in his grove. They run but put out to the pasture.

Used 2 New Idea Uni 's with GMC 60degree 401 V-6. A very strong gas engine that used little more fuel than the diesel at full power.

I don?t know which model Hesston swather Loren is referring to because I believe later ones did have a 225 cid. When I was growing up on the farm we had a couple different 420 models and they had 170 cid. Of course they were all belt drive not hydrostatic. Both were hard starting when not warmed up. Plenty of power to run the 14ft head and crimper conditioner and didn?t use much gas either.

Dad had a '70 Duster with 198 slant 6, and a '67 D100 pickup with 225 slant 6. Both with 3 on the tree. Dad and I competed for gas mileage between his Duster and my '70 Nova with 307 V8 & 3-speed manual. I always got within 2-3 mpg of his Duster but my Nova's performance was WAY better. The sheetmetal on his Duster did dissolve faster than my Nova's sheet metal did. Duster had a bigger trunk too.
Comparing the D100 to the '67 F250 Camper Special pickup with 352 V8 and FMX trans Dad had in '70 to '72 was like comparing a push scooter to a high performance Ducati motorcycle.

The slant 6's would have been fine in small farm equipment. The Chevy 292 and Ford 300-6 was used in lots of non-automotive applications.

I have a customer with one in a case IH 8830 mower/conditioner from the early '90s. Also called the "Hillside Hemi" around here.

that is the 265 cid 6 cyl. flathead engine minneapolis used. later ones had the 318 v8. the 265 had better lugging power , I used both engines. don't get the slant six engine mixed u with the flathead engine. the slant six was leaning over at 30 degree's. flathead had the spark plugs on the top of head.

Gas version of the later john Deere windrower, the 2320, used them, as well.

I read yesterday that there was an all aluminum slant six. In the fifties Chrysler had Industrial Hemis running farm equipment. Also the Chrysler air raid sirens.

Early 420 Hestons had the 170 and the late ones had the 225. The 170s were a little under powered if you pushed the swather a little hard. The machine we ran has a 170 and the parts machine has a 225 in it. I plan on getting the one with the 170 out of the barn in the next week and changing the steering belts in preparation to try and sell it. We bought a 8400 last year and my brother loves it after having spent 25 years with the 420
