So have been talking to a guy for a few days about his tractor and it not running well. Went and looked at it today. He fired it up and I noticed a bit of a popping so pull the plugs out and found #3 was wet with gas. Checked the compression on it and less then 30PSI. So pull the hood and gas tank and checked the valves. All of them where out of spec. So I adjusted them and then check compression again and still low so checked compression on #2 and it too was 30PSI so pulled the head. About an inch of head gasket was gone between to two cylinder so tomorrow I will be putting on a new head gasket.

without checking the head and block for flatness? very good chance that will burn out in the same spot. I have seen that already.

Old, for future reference you don't need to pull the tank to check the valves. The cover rolls out. You are taking a chance not getting it surfaced.

If anything is so uneven that it could blow a head gasket, you can easily check it yourself with a simple straight-edge. No way would I waste time and money trying to bring anything to shop.

I just had one of those 134 Red Tiger engines apart. Mine had two low compression cylinders and it ended up two intake valves were sticking. I pulled the head off and found some hard black gunk on the valve stems. It was like flame-hardened varnish and it was making the valves hang up. Never seen anything like it before. I pulled the valves out, cleaned up the stems, seats, and valve-heads. All it fine now.
QUESTION . . . When I pulled the head off I found this head-gasket on the engine. It is a lot different then the new one I got. Engine runs fine with the new smaller-combustion chamber gasket. I am wondering if the one that was on it maybe from a bigger 172 engine?

Yes I know it can be done but it is easier to pull the hood and tank since having that low a compression reading I was sort of thinking ti would be more then just the valves. As for checking the head I have a straight edge in the car for checking before putting it back on
