Chains on back of bruhhog

As you see it has chains on front and rear if I took off the rear would it discharge material out the back more it just makes a mess out of the rear if the tractor as you can see in the pic thanks Rick

Chains are there to slow the flight of projectiles that may be kicked up by the blades, if you operate it in an area without people around, or stuff to be easily damaged, you could certainly remove the rear chains and give it a try, I would GUESS it would at least lessen the debris tossed forward.

Also, are you operating the cutter with the front end LOWER than the rear by at least 1/4" (some say at least an inch)?

Read a John Grisham book one time, probably not true, but a guy was being sued for not having chains on his Brush Hog model rotary cutter. His machine threw a rock and killed a kid. That was enough for me to put them on front and rear on both of my cutters. I do some custom work with them and wouldn't run without them. I think they run ok with them on.

In my younger days I bought a new bush hog type mower. I was going to save money by not buying the chains. Run a piece of wire into one of the rear tires. So I paid the tire repair and a set of chains No problems since. So I?d leave the chains on.

Even with chains a rock will get through a rotary mower some how. I learned the hard way on my flail mower. It has a rubber shield behind the blades. I had to remove it to have access to the blades. I left it off. A rock flew into a large factory window a few years ago. Cost me 500.00, and my insurance co 1000.00. I have a shield on now. Stan

I use chains on the rear of all of my rotary cutters. Chains allow clippings to disperse better in heavy cover than does belting.

I've tried chains on the front as well but prefer belt shielding here to reduce the amount of debris thrown onto the back of the tractor. Helps much.

Only the bat wing cutter has chains on the front.

Since I don't mow in public places yes I took my chains off so that it would quit making a mess when it mows.

No chains on the back for me......chains on the front are a must. I don't like the vinyl on the front because it lays the grass over before the blades come in contact & doesn't do as clean a cut. Just my experience, your call.
