I am on a roll

I posted last week about getting two woodchucks with one shot. they were numbers 2 and three from out of my barn foundation. A day or two later I got two more, and that appears to be the whole foundation population. I am haying just down the road from my place, and I found two chuck holes with a greater than normal amount of dirt at the entrances. This afternoon I was there haying, And I got one with my tractor. They don't seem to be able to run fast for any distance.

Gassed a couple already this year. Damn things just don't give up do they? Love
those hog bombs. At $5.oo ea. you take some care using them.

Yesterday about 7:00 in the evening I was tooling down the gravel road with the four wheeler and a woodchuck came out of the tall grass and ran across the road disappearing into the grass on the other side right in front of me. It was not running as fast as some animals but I have never seen one run so maybe what I saw was top speed only a woodchuck s top speed does not seem to be very speedy. I went up the road a mile and dumped the rain gauge then came back. When I passed back through the spot the woodchuck had been a badger was hanging around there and it was acting real defensive. I rarely see a badger during the daytime so I suspect the badger and the woodchuck were having a squabble over who should occupy a hole somewhere in the area. I rarely see a woodchuck in my area for that matter.

Dog got one this am. Not sure why it was up by the house, but it wont be
back. By the time I had finished my coffee and went out to bury it, Gus
had beat me to it and buried it next to the porch. Saving it for later I
guess... Tried to upload a pic, but the site isn't having it.

Good dog! I has a cat that buried a large rabbit in the barn. He wasnt very happy when I moved it. If you're going to upload a pic you better go make some coffee and get a sandwich. My reception is bad so I cant blame it on the sight.

I heard one whistle recently for the first time in my 58 years. H was cornered under the porch by an outbuilding. He could not out run the 22 Mag.

We used to have a lot of them here in
upstate NY. I used to hunt them most
summer evenings but their population has
greatly diminished in the last ten years.
I don't know if the increased coyote
population has caused it or wetter weather
has made their burrows uninhabitable.

I think a lot of the reason that population is down is due to the fact that farmers did away with lots of hedgrows to increase field size and hay and pasture ground is worked up and reseeded much more frequently.----Loren

I've only ever heard one do that. It was cornered in a log pile. I didnt hear this one, but gf said it hollered when the dog got a hold of it.
