49 8n firing order

Firing order is 1-2-4-3 ? Right? But the crab cap has numbers on it and I would assume that it is numbered correctly? 1 is top on one side 2 on bottom. 3 is top of other side 4 on bottom. It's let my ignorance show day! Lol. While we are discussing old 8Ns where do you test the square coil? Round coil is easy ,it's labled + -. Square coil + is the stud on top. .....- ? Thanks.

Square coil (+) is the stud on top, (-) = the coiled pigtail spring under the coil that makes contact with the special "cup head" brass screw in the distributor.

Thanks. I'm thinking that black goo,tar like substance leaking out of coil is bad? Time for a parts order. Yesterday was my rainy day to work on a couple project Ns and it didn't rain. .. so off to work I went! Plotting strategy for the weekend...
