since finding so much cob work on the jd. i will ask you all about the correct piston placement. there is a hole through the piston behind the compression rings, does this hole face up?

I forget which year tractor you are working on. IIRC the bottom face of the skirts will be stamped TOP and this side goes to the top. Oversized and or aftermarket pistons may only be marked on the head end of the piston along with the oversize stamping.

Some may also have a dot like a center punch mark on the bottom face of the skirt instead of the words TOP

It there are holes drilled halfway around in the bottom of the oil ring groove, the holes go down.
