Got a New Hay Mower

My farrier and I have been restoring this old IHC #9 Cycle Bar Mower. It is a 1959 IHC High Gear with a 6'bar. The mower was completely disassembled and all new seals, bearings, tires, bar, guards, sections, and blasted with soda. Primed and painted with auto paint with hardner. Almost looked too good to use, but we tried it out with the farriers team. Worked great on some pretty thick brome. Can't wait until I can hook my boys up to it. Ran out of daylight today, but sure wanted to.

Eli Avery out of Westmorland. There was a mowing last weekend in Missouri, just North of KC. I was trying to put up hay for real, so he took it with his horses and broke it in. Worked great, but it is close to brand new so it should..lol

I'll try to post a.couple of pics of the mowing last week. This is Eli trying it out and setting it up. He is good at that for being just 30 years old.

That rebuilt MCD NO. 9 looks great. When properly adjusted, I have found they are hard to beat for cutting hay with horses. I wonder about the stated date of 1959 for the mower. Is this a typo? In Lynn Miller's book "The Horsedrawn Mower Book, Restoration & Operation of McCormick #9 Mowers" (2007), he states for the NO.9 "Last models built and sold new from 1939 to 1949." The date of manufacture is cast into the underneath side of the frame. Lay on you back and slide your head beneath the frame just below the seat and you can read the date, if it has not been covered with the new paint job. You can look forward to some enjoyable mowing with your team.

That looks like such a good job and will be so much fun. Amazing how much time something like that can take but still the satisfaction and pride of a job well done!

looks really good!i remember taking my dad coffee at the other end of the farm when he was cutting hay with that same mower and with the horses, just had steel wheels. then he used the horse rake for raking. never forget that.

Wouldn't be the first time Miller was wrong. There were spare parts in the warehouses for a long time. Doesn't seem unreasonable to think one could be put together special order.
