Anyone ever grow Broomcorn. Years ago(40 or so)I had more time than I knew what to do with. I planted some Broomcorn. I cut it, hung it to dry. And made some small brooms. I don't know why they call it corn it doesn't make a cob. They still make brooms out of it. I think it is planted for feed also. Stan

We plant some every few years. Wife makes late summer and fall decorations out of it. Although the seed heads are supposed to be sterile, they are not! Be sure to destroy what is not harvested.

Arcola, Illinois has a "Broom Corn Festival" every fall. During festival they make brooms the old fashion way and sell them. Have attended several times. It's also Amish area so lots of good food.

I have. It would be a challenge to harvest the seeds with a combine without destroying the broom strands. I used a wire brush with the "broom" on a hoard.

Corn is an old word for grain/kernel/pellet. Thats why they call it maize in europe. All grain types make corn. And corned beef doesn't have corn in it. It's dried with salt pellets.

And I've wanted to grow broom corn. I just know I won't take the time to do anything with it.
