Ford 1710 with no hydraulic filter

I started to change the hydraulic fluid in my tractor that I bought used last year and I could not find the filter. It is a Ford 1710 tractor and after researching where the filter was I discovered that who ever owned it before me removed the filter and bypassed it. Any idea why someone would do this and what problems will this cause?

I am not real familiar with that model. I think it is similar to our JD750 compact. The JD did not come with a hyd. filter , but it was an option and if you also put on a power steering kit I think you were also to add this optional filter. I did add one on our tractor because I was using a 3 point log splitter and thought the extra filtering might be a good idea. Now it also has a fine mesh screen in the bottom of the trans. case that is a suction filter. Your tractor likely does have a suction screen too. You might be able to still get a filter kit from New Holland ? or find one at a tractor junk yard.

Makes no sense to me. If you are having no hydraulic problems then I would plumb one back in. Original would be nice but that is an old tractor now and they may not have those parts. The 10's were replaced by the 20's and even those are history now. I have a 1520. I would definitely get a new filter on that. If you have ever rebuilt the hydraulics on a tractor you know there are lots of places for junk to get caught up. It's just plumbing, take off the bypass and plumb in something that works.

Here is a picture of mine if it helps any, at least you will know where and how belongs. I can't imagine why anyone would remove it, you can see where my heal rubs it.
