Winter propane contract

This wouldn't be too tractor related, except I've got a propane Ollie....
Anyway, local propane supplier sent out their yearly propane contract. Seems pretty early, but I guess they don't want any surprises.
Their prepaid price for the 2019-2020 season is $1.14/gallon prepaid, slightly higher if you do the percentage-down contract.
It's been quite few years since it's been that cheap. After some suppliers charging $4.00/gallon a few years ago for the mid-winter panic, yea, I will contract.
BTW, he's coming to fill the tank this morning and the cash sale is $.90/gallon. Not too bad.....

That is a pretty amazing price. $1.35 here at the "tip of the mitt" in Michigan.

I wonder if any of the propane companies that sell 20 lb. camper and barbecue tanks will ever start filling them all the way again?

Blue Rhino at places like Walmart only fill to 15 lbs. HUGE rip off in my opinion. The partial-fill thing began when propane prices got super high. They claimed it was to make propane "more affordable."

My 100% pre-pay for last year was $1.49.9/gallon. Truck was back late last week, $1.19.9/gal. We always get an August or Sept fill then start the contract. Bet we only need 50-60 gallon this year. Gasoline prices are supposed to drop in the coming weeks, hope LP does too.

Wish I could find a 1000 gallon tank like Dad did. He tied two 1000 gallon tanks together, he'd buy LP about every two years. LP company says I use slightly over 950 gal/year, but was more like 1200-1300 last winter.

I swear my LP company is highest price around, but I keep them because the driver looks out for me. He dropped off 200 gallon @ $2.00/gal to get me by the $4-$5 LP a couple years ago, then filled when price came down. Plus if I need a service call they get someone here in a couple hours.

The whole Blue Rhino deal is a rip off, IMHO. Pay more than twice as much for propane, or so I thought- even worse if you're only getting 15#. Not sure how much more "convenient" it is than BSing with the propane guy while he fills your tank down at the farm supply store.

i thought it was a fed law that propane tanks can only be filled to 80%.

Our propane companies wont let you hook two tanks together, well, they will let you, but nobody will fill them.

i bought a LP hauler truck from my local company, 2400 gallon and set that for the house.

I checked prepaid price a couple of weeks ago in south-central Minnesota. It was $1.24/gallon, down from $1.30 last year. I'm gambling by waiting a while to see if it will come down more, considering crude-oil price this morning is down $1.20/bbl to $52.07. Time will tell. I always buy 1,000 gallons, so a change of 10 cents a gallon makes a difference of $100 up or down.

Paid $1.59 last month with large volume ag discount, home fuel is over $2.
Don't know if they'll let you tie two home tanks together or not but we have four 1000 gallon tanks tied together in pairs, all feeding to one 2" supply line.

Ferrellgas owned the tank when I bought my place many years ago, and I wasn't even aware I could contract for my winter supply. The Ferrellgas folks never bothered to mention it. I found out from my delivery guy who was moving to a new job and felt safe suggesting Ferrellgas wasn't the best way to go. I checked Ferrellgas price vs. my current supplier every month all winter, and the closest F-gas came was 9 cents/gal. higher. I switched the following summer and convinced five other propane users to do the same. Also, I found out that another F-gas user had bought 1,200 gallons for a total cost that was less than I paid for 1,000 gallons -- something about a quantity discount break point that Ferrellgas had never bothered to point out was available. Did I feel a bit ripped off? Well, buyer beware....

In SJ there are people with LP heat but most heating in my area is oil or natural gas. I have no idea about bulk prices but just for fun here are refill prices. At your local gas station you can get your 20lb. cylinder filled and the high was $18.oo. Three days ago I had a cylinder filled to 20lb. and it was only $12.oo. That is a Very good price in this area. So that works out to $1.60 a pound IF you really get 20 lbs give or take. Now that needs to be converted to gallons. Not really a fair comparison but it gives you some idea.

Most "20 lb." tanks hold 20 lbs. when safely filled with 20 lbs. of propane. NOT 15 lbs. All depends on the TARE numbers stamped on the
tank.

A 20 pound tank holds 4.2 gallons usable.you can squeeze almost 5 in there,BUT,if you tip that tank one iota it will put liquid in the regulator, lines, etc.whether it is against the law or not,it is not a viable thing to do.A 100 pounder holds 22 gallons.Generally those are not filled by weight, they are filled by opening the bleeder, and when liquid comes out they are full.Tare weights are pretty standard now,and a lot of guys just throw them on a scale and don't look at the tare first.I have four rough usage tanks that tare in at double the weight of a regular gas grille tank, although they look the same.

Our 1000 gal house tank was down to 58% they filled it to 84% for $.98 paying cash within 10 days. We never burn more than 1/2 tank thru the winter// On a side note I filled up with truck E85 gas last night for $2.07 . Sure like that

Blue Rino at our local Rural King and Wally world are only filled to 14 lbs. now. They still exchange the 20 lb. tanks but that's all that is put in them now. Still the same price as it was for 20 a few years ago. But on the other hand has anyone looked at how much coffee is in a can now?

Hi Gamble, I live down here in New Mexico, We don't have a "Prepaid" price deal like you do up North! Please tell me what you mean by prepaid ? Do you just have to agree to buy so much propane to get the lowest price, or do you have to pay the whole amount up front? I own my own tanks and we have three suppliers here and they all have the prices close. please tell me what what you can! thanks Jim

In my case, "prepaid" means to pay the whole amount contracted ahead of time to get the best price. I had my tank filled today for $.90/gallon. I also contracted about 1250 more gallons for the 2019-2020 winter and will prepay all of it. The contract needs to be postmarked by the 15th of this month. You can also do a contract where you put 20% of the money down. The price for each gallon is a few cents per gallon higher, but when the prepaid price for last year was about $1.45/gallon, I'm happy with this year's price.
