Canadian plastic question

I heard on the radio today that there?s going to be a single use plastic ban in Canada as early as 2021. What is that going to mean for silage plastic in Canada? They said the manufacturer will be responsible for collecting and recycling their own plastic so is the price going to near double then they?ll want it washed and stored in containers for pickup? The report said it will create new jobs so you know whose going to fund those.

I don?t think the agricultural plastic is the target of the ban. More the consumer products like fast food containers, plastic water bottles, and shopping bags. Stretch wrap for bales and plastic for covering silage bunkers, likely not even on their radar. It?s the stuff that ends up floating around in the ocean and washing up on coast lines that is driving this. If the junk sunk to the bottom instead of floating, nothing would ever been done. Just don?t see bale plastic washing down streams and ending up at sea.

I hope your right Bruce,it?s $105/roll for 30? here now we don?t need it going way up anytime soon. Did you get your corn in yet?

Don't be too sure.

Years agone a US rangeland bloke warned us that the problem with legislation such as the "spotted owl" is not so much what it does when enacted but what it can be twisted to do later

I have no idea and don't think the govt. does either. What about baler twine plastic? Grain bags?. Yes, get rid of some of the fast food plastic that idiots throw out their windows and litter the countryside with.

Are you kidding? It was getting to the point we could work the fields on the weekend, but rain all day. And rained very hard at times, water is laying around like a warm spell in March from snow melt. Even fields that have been planted are in trouble now, and it is forecasted to rain nearly every day for the next week. I cut some hay on Thursday, field was soft enough. Let it dry till late Sunday afternoon and baled it. Still to wet, but I cannot even drive into that field now after all this rain. If it doesn?t dry out soon, there is going to be a lot of farmers in desperate shape.

Kind of scary, we have that kind of nonsense on the east and west coast and now above us too. All it would take is Mexico and we would be surrounded.

I dont about baler twine and tarps but studies have shown that alot of plastic comes from plastic breaking down up in the mountains and floating down the streams. I think there are only a few countries dumping in the ocean. Alot of the plastic is from plastic breaking down and run off. If you're eating fish or seafood good chance it has eaten plastic.

I was mowing a field next to the California DMV. Across that field was a fast food. So much plastic trash from people visiting the fast food. All I could do was mow through it. Now there is small pieces everywhere. Some people are just pigs. The owner was there, and didn't seam to care. He just wanted was his field mowed so he didn't get sighted by the fire dept. Stan

I think this is an opportunity for chemists to invent a safe alternative to plastic or a safe biodegrading plastic. Can hemp fiber be used for many farming applications?

B&D ..... are you a betting man or just stating a possibility? Remember, the whole country votes, not just certain regions.

They already make biodegradable cups and silverware. I dont think it lasts long so doesn't work for storing food in. There are alternatives such as paper cups and plates but they keep shoving styrofoam at us.

Don't panic.

The "ban" from what I've read will target only specific plastic items for consumers. Items like plastic shopping bags, straws, plastic cutlery, and other items that are generally used once and tend not to be recycled.

There has been no mention of banning plastic liquids containers or anything else commonly used in agriculture. All of the items that seem to be the target of this ban have replacements currently available that are biodegradable. Paper bags, paper cups, etc.

If I was a US farmer and the US government was proposing this I'd be scared, very scared.

Lot of that stuff gets passed claiming it's only targeting certain items, then a few years later they say well if you really read what the ban says.....You can't convince me they didn't have that in mind from day one.

Ontario and Quebec shall decide who the Primimister of Canada shall be..........very,very sad situation!

I always vote........the generation under <50 voted the present Primimister in...the voting law in Canada should be changed to make voting mandatory.....it's called Democracy. Democracy should be embraced by all Canadians!
