So now that I have a smartphone I'm looking for advice. What I want to do is store music on the phone, pretty simple right? My kids are no help. They all have unlimited data, I don't. So how do I put songs on the stupid phone so I can listen to what I want to hear without being online? It's an LG G5 if it matters. Must be something simple I'm missing entirely.

If you have Wi-Fi in your house, that is hooked to the Internet, you can download through it with out using data. I know my sons switch their phones to the WI-FI in the shop to save data when looking up stuff/downloading stuff while working on stuff.

You need the songs on a source, like your computer, and a program to put them on the phone from your computer. The amount of data doesn't matter this way. Or as JDSeller suggested, use wifi and get radio apps that have what you like to listen to on it. iS it an Android phone?

You can take a music app, either microsoft or itunes,,, and put all your cd's into the computer. Then when you plug your phone into the computer, you can "sync" it or load it with pictures, music, movies, etc...

I have apps that put my dvd's and movies onto my computer and then onto my phone. I can tell it to put 5 of the "unwatched" movies on to my phone, my top rated songs, and some tv shows that I capture on streaming. Sadly I have around 6000 songs on my computer.

So do I. Kids got me hooked on it.
I listen to it on wifi.
It has a feature where you can get your stations and then listen to it off line. I don't subscribe to it so don't know fully how it works.

Thanks guys. I'd love to use Pandora but once I'm out of wifi range it comes off my minutes. That's the whole point of downloading to the phone. I'll keep looking.

since you have an Android phone its not to difficult, it depends on how savvy you are with your computer.
use the data 9USB) cable that came with your phone and hook up the phone to the pc.
copy all the music you want to use to a "music" folder on your PC
copy that folder directly to your phone
now your android music player will see the music folder and the songs inside of it.
if the music folder already exists, then just copy your songs directly into it.
