Too much work

The weather this week has been generally dry here is SE PA. Monday and Tuesday were perfect and we got 4 acres baled up in the evening after work. The forecast for Friday, Saturday and Sunday was great so I mowed down our last 9 acres. Figuring we had 2 days to get it all baled. And unloaded. Wrong. Friday was cloudy, yesterday slightly overcast and rain coming north from VA. So we kicked it into high gear. But a schedule conflict caused our work force down to 2 of us. Unfortunately unloading wagons take a minimum of 2 people. So, we ran 2 rakes and 2 balers and unloaded as fast as possible. It was a 15 hour, 1300 bale day. The baler with the new bill hooks missed zero. My second baler hasn?t been used in 2 years and it took about 10 bales for me to get the knotter tying. Then it was off to the races.

Been great weather since Thursday or maybe wed. I was thinking the same thing here is a solid 3 + window to get a first cut in.
The orchard grass was 5'-6' tall in the field next to my house, nice lush green hay grasses, headed out, the pollen and whatever it is that falls off, coated my tractor. I was just mowing with a 6' rotary cutter, had to run in 3rd gear, very thick and water laden with all the rains. This is excellent drying weather, minimal dew at night. Best I'll do with some of it is mulch for the garden.
Cool to hear about your haying and beating the weather !

The cage guards were gone when I bought the baler. I had a set and sold them. They are a nuisance when a bale hangs up so I wouldn?t want them on anyway. I will say this, turn the PTO off and the kicker won?t kick. Lock it out and it won?t kick. Our rule is we do both, 100% of the time.

That particular 4 acres has both late maturing orchard grass and Timothy mixed. It was thick. Probably 160 bales per acre. I really like that field.
