Fluid spurting from vent cap

Drove the 990 David Brown tractor that I bought yesterday about three miles to fetch my bush-hog that I?d left in the woods, about a 1/4 from the house on the return trip it started spurting fluid out of the vented cap on the power steering reservoir, what would cause this and what?s the remedy to fix it?

One of two things might be causing this-overfull and heating up. Two, could be low and sucking air, foaming up and spitting out. Or-your pump relief valve could be weak, making it blow it out!! That's my two cents worth of thought. Somebody that's a DB tech will give you a good answer!!

It's also possible the P.O. used the wrong oil, or it has moisture in it.

Do you have an operator's manual to find out what oil is recommended?

I don?t have a manual for it, fluid is red like transmission fluid,
when I parked it under the barn I screwed the vent cap off and
reservoir was almost empty. When it started spurting out it
was also foaming up on top of reservoir on the drive back to
my house

Okay so maybe it got low enough before you refilled it to get air in the system. And is working the air out the more it is used causing the foaming and expanding to the point it is "overflowing".

With no history it is hard to pinpoint a cause.

Could be air in the system.
Could be a restriction in system (most likely filter) causing it to return fluid faster than it can pump it out.

I believe ATF is the correct oil even though some may recommend engine oil.

I would start with cleaning or replacing the filter.

Look the system over carefully for leaks. Start it up, have an assistant slowly turn the wheel each direction while you look for leaks.

That is typically caused from the oil getting low, the pump sucking air, foaming up the oil until it blows out the cap vent.

Be careful, it may really come shooting out when the engine is shut off!

Thanks guys, I?ll get a filter ASAP and try that, stay tuned for my next post, just shook hands on a JD ?A? on steel wheels, I?ll post pics tonight......
