Case 4490 PTO shaft won't stop

I'm helping out my neighbour with his 4490.
Somehow over the winter the PTO shaft won't turn
off. The first issue is the leaver position. We want to
make sure it's in the OFF placement .... all the
writing is gone and we just want to make sure it's on
the right place for off, either forward or backward.

Now it's still always spins regardless bet than we
can at least ensure the linkage into the hydraulic
motor is all moving correctly.

Beyond the linkage to the hydraulic motor what
could it be internally? I don't think it's the case at
the back that the PTO shaft comes out of, that just
looks like a speed reducer or increaser.

Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated. I asssume
I'm going to need to remove some stuff to get up
inside to the motor and linkages.

Thanks, I'll keep you posted as we go through it.

That tractor does not have a hydraulic motor to drive the PTO. It is mechanically driven from the back of the transmission and powered thru a hydraulic wet clutch. You need to trace the linkage from engagement handle to the control valve and make sure it moves the valve the proper distance. You can unhook the hydraulic line to the clutch and see if there is no flow, with engine running. If no flow and PTO still turns the clutch plates have been slipped and warped or the brake has failed. If it does not turn when line is unhooked, the valve linkage is out of adjustment, and you should see oil coming from disconnected line. Take off the fiberglass cover behind the cab and you can see all the components. Do yourself a favor and get a service manual, and drop down to the CASE forum below and redirect your question there------------Loren

Thanks Lorne.
I'll take a look tomorrow and see what it looks like, and see if he can get the manule.
