Our future?

There was an episode of Chasing Classic Cars a while back.

Wayne Carini was looking to hire an apprentice for his shop.

After interviewing several from the local tech school, he hired one.

What made him stand out was he recognized and was able to correctly identify...

A set of points and a condenser!

Not what they fit, just what they were!

Movie buffs--I am going to slaughter the spelling of this name--is that GI Telley Savalous-Dirty Dozen?---Tee

People have been saying the same thing about the next generation since time began.

It seemed that the ancient Greeks thought surely that the world would end because of the slacker "kids these days".

"I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on
frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond
words... When I was young, we were taught to be discreet and
respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly wise
[disrespectful] and impatient of restraint" (Hesiod, 8th century BC).

Plato was surprised that the world hadn't come to an end. HIS teacher, Aristottle, had been complaing about the useless next generation since Plato was in school:

"The children now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority, they show disrespect to their elders.... They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and are tyrants over their teachers."

"The young people of today think of nothing but themselves. They have no reverence for parents or old age. They are impatient of all restraint. They talk as if they alone knew everything and what passes for wisdom with us is foolishness with them. As for girls, they are forward, immodest and unwomanly in speech, behaviour and dress."

It might come as a shock, but the young people these days aren't exactly impressed by the way you oldsters have been running sone aspects of the country for the last 50 years. Old codgers might know how to start a lawnmower, but what the present generation is really good at is running up government deficits and creating massive social programs that give money to the older generation and leave the bill for somebody else to pay down the road.

Could you correctly name the different pieces of a horse work harness or even know what a work harness is? My grandmother would have thought anyone that couldn't was a total Idiot.

Well this may come as a shock sonny but most of us older guys don't like the deficits or the social programs either. Many of us have voted for conservatives for a very long time. Really want to see what's going on and who created this problem? Look at more modern history. The original "New Deal". The massive welfare reform bills that were passed. Look at which side championed them. Legally buying votes with tax payer money is what they were doing. Kinda funny that something workers pay into is "going broke" (social security) and welfare has got plenty of money. We didn't create that. At least my generation didn't. That was already here.

I dunno, at this moment I have a friend's 17 year old grandson busting his a$$ scraping paint off one of my barns with a paint scraper. gm

TF, you are correct!

I have no use for anything bigger, stronger, and faster than me that doesn't have a throttle, brake, or kill switch!

Well, I guess they do have a kill switch, but it's a one time deal! LOL

Our local Co-op no longer has tire repair services. The guy who did them retired and they could not find anyone to replace him.

There are lots of hard working, knowledgable and respectable young adults out there.I know some of them.As for the slackers, blame their parents.

I have no doubt that is what you were told, and surely what you believe, but the reality of the situation is they were unwilling to pay the cost for a competent replacement.

Agreed. I raised two of 'em, and they and their spouses are fine, upstanding, hard-working people that contribute to society every day.

Yup, Telly Savalas. Got a picture of him with my Dad at a golf tournament in Houston. Dad was a huge fan of his, so I went to Telly told him that and asked if we could get a picture. He replied ?Sure you can, my pleasure.? Then he walked over to Dad, grabbed him on a bear hug, talked for a minute then I snapped this picture. Doesn?t show up well here as the glare off the glass on the frame is bad.

That's a wonderful story -- and one you won't hear from newer "celebs". Their fans are simply that....fans. With Telly and many of the older generations, the fans were "people".

Thanks for the story. Would be a good idea to type it up and paste it to the back of the frame, along with as much info as possible; exact location, day/month/year, etc.

Yes, but they didn't have computer-controlled everything that could think for itself. Just wait till A.I. is widespread and common as sliced bread. I got a real bad feeling about what is to come.

Thank you!
When I started reading this thread my
mind immediately went back to 'The

Glad to see there are other philosophers
here.

I've got a soon to be 19 yr old son who just finished his first year of college, going to be a high school band director. He is not worth a spit working around the house. But he makes A'& B's, has a 50% scholarship and is starting to pick up paying jobs in his future profession. He didn't get to be "section leader" for next fall in the marching band because the professor told him he was to serious about music. It would have meant a few hundred dollars on his scholarship. None of his peers care about what they are doing. He is being asked by long time band directors to help them pick music for next year's contests. He has the list of music, thousands of songs, mostly memorized. I'm proud of him. He is nothing like me at that age. His peers are not very impressive. He will not have a hard time finding a good job when he graduates, the competition is pitiful.

Gotta agree. Heck here in small rural towns they are starting convenience store employees at 11 an hour with no experience. Local place that does tires tries paying that for tire guys. They can't keep em either. The place my wife worked at is starting it's folks doing oil changes and tires 15. If they get trained in and work out they will be up to 18-19 an hour in 2-3 years. But the Coop doesn't want to pay that kinda money.

Rick

Well said Rick. The Greatest Generation just didn't understand the bill of goods they were being sold.
