Tank repair

Although it?s leaking in one small spot;there are 2
grapefruit sized rust spots on the bottom of the
diesel tank on my 445 long.i know I can wire brush
and braze the leak but I don?t know how thin the rust
spots are.coat it or braze it or both?
 
Brazing is too much heat. You'll end up with a warped mess. Sand blast it and solder it, and coat it with tank liner if you like.

You can buy a tank repair kit at the auto parts store. Some kinds glue and mesh. I did a tank over 10 years ago.
 
Brazing is probably too much heat for a rusty tank. I would clean and solder it.
I fixed a John Deere 2030 tank that looked like Swiss cheese on the bottom, had to solder it with copper screen to hold the solder then use tank sealer as insurance. Would have gotten another tank, but nothing better was available at the time.
 
If it's not leaking I would wire brush and treat the spot with phosphoric acid and then thoroughly rinse. Once dry prime the spot with an epoxy primer and paint it.

Stephen, how do you paint inside the tank?
 
Do a search here on the YT forums for the topic of gas tank sealer, or a Google search. This topic was discussed here in the past month. Two tank linking products come to mind that both work, I have used them both. Bill Hirsch auto/truck fuel tank coating and also one called Red Kote. Both are single component and do not need a ton of cleaning or rust removal from the tank. I'm sure there are lots of videos as well on a Google search to show you how it's done. One for Red Kote is below ..... and like I say, I've used both products.
