Craigslist rant

I listed a boat on Craigslist that I don't have the time to use. A guy comes look at it. Chews me down but we agree on a price. 7 HOURS later texts me it leaks and he found 12 other boats in "comparable" condition for less money. He wants me to refund him $100. I told him no, the boat is 30 years old and was sold as is. He told me he is coming in the morning with boat in the truck and he is either getting his $100 or leaving the boat and getting all of it. This is on a $200 aluminum row boat. Some people.

Not bad idea. I already walked out and closed/locked the gate as well. Can still climb over but won't be able drive up. Unless he breaks lock. But then he's breaking the law if he does

Was there any type of receipt that said "as is " ? Just asking. Wants
100 dollars back on a 200 dollar item. Ridiculous ! Sounds to me like
this is his last haggling stragedy on the deal after you said you already
dropped the price. I would have told him to bring it back if you want,
but your not getting your money back. In saying all this I believe you
were honest and didn't sell him a boat you knew leaked. Guy sounds like he
ain't all there ! You shoulda told him about that flex seal and flex tape
stuff they sell on the infomercials ! Works on tv. I saw it !

Bill of sale, no "as-is" but no warranty either.
Well I took it 5 miles up river and 5 miles back and inside was dry as a popcorn fart for me. So who knows what he did in 7 hours time. *If* it started leaking for him. He did something to it. He did text me a pic of water in the boat, but pulling in a fishing line would drip more water then what was in picture.

I suspect he's bluffing, probably never hear from him again, hopefully...

But I would be prepared for the worst, just in case.

If he breaks the gate, comes on your property, refuses to leave, it becomes criminal on his part.

I would say as soon as he pulls in the drive way call 911. let the police handle it. if you tell them he is trespassing then they will remove him.

This. No point in getting into an argument that is not winnable and can ony escalate unless you roll over and there is NO need for that. Screw him.

Years ago I had a used hood for a Ford 800 series tractor. It was not perfect but usable. I had it advertised saying it was that way. The first fellow came and looked at it and just stated it was not good enough for his project so he Thanked me and left. Great way to do business. Next fellow came and started running it down all the while wanting the price reduced. He really got on my nerves real quick. The hood was laying on the ground right in front of my loader tractor. I jumped on the tractor and mashed the hood flat to the ground an then tossed it into my junk pile. Fellow came unglued. LOL I told him it was not good enough for him so I just solved both our problems. LOL

This new fad of watching TV shows on bargain dealing has caused a lot of people to think they should low ball everything just because they can. Dealing with these kind of people gets old real fast. I list at a fair price to start with. I do not go fishing for suckers with inflated prices.

This low balling and complaining has gotten so bad it really has turned me off selling things directly. One big reason I scrapped a hold shed full of useable JD "odd" parts. Like frame rails, fuel tanks and such. Scrape yard never complained or low balled me one time. LOL

So tell the fellow to go pound sand on a $200 boat.

007 ..... of course Craig List is responsible, I remember him from grade school. Craig Malcolm List, always trying to scam
somebody. Really, he should interview personally everybody who posts an ad to make sure they are God-fearing and church-going
folks who are leaders in their community. Because he doesn't do that, you get the occasional guy poking a hole in the bottom
of an aluminum boat and demanding his money back.

He just needed a boat for the afternoon and didn't think you would lend it to him. This way he got to use it now he doesn't want it any more. He wants his money back so it would be free rent. I wouldn't give him anything back. Let us know if he shows up how things turn out.

Steven

Just let him know that if he shows up he can have his choice between the cops or the Second Amendment.

Sod: did he give you a check or cash? If a check it will be cancelled or stop pay so take the boat back. Cash is a different issue.

He paid cash.

Agreed to $25 to go away.
He'll sign a paper saying he considers matter resolved before he gets it though.

It's bull crap but $25 is easier then playing his game to infinity. I guess it takes all kinds to make the world go round. Alot of drama just to get an extra $25 of the price.

I know....
But is it worth fighting. Lost time dealing with cops courts etc. Even if I counter sued for lost time, good luck collecting, Locking gates behind you and worrying about animals well being and all this trouble over $25.

I'm glad you got the matter resolved, and you're able to move on, but there was never any risk of him taking you to court.

Craig's list is nothing more than classified ads. No more, no less. They do not supply the goofballs that come your way any more than the morning newspaper does in their classified advertising.

You should have made sure that there were no refunds, no further price reductions, and you should have put "as-is" on the bill of sale.

Bad business deals are not the fault of the advertising media. They are the fault of the parties involved. You both have a responsibility to hold up your own end of the deal. It is YOUR responsibility to protect yourself from goofballs. Not Craig's list.

Everyone i?ve Came across on Craigslist expects a warranty no matter what you tell them or what the receipt says. ? I only had it one day,it should last longer than that? is a standard speech I hear. Usually if they call within 48 hours they want there money back. The wife gets mad or a neighbor tells them they paid to much.

Jim ..... by the sounds of the buyer of the boat, you could have had it signed, sealed and delivered by the local judge and police chief and it's likely he would have been back for some kind of a refund. He likely does that with everything he buys, including new stuff from stores. I would say a $200 sale needs a receipt but a guy doesn't have to create a document like the constitution to keep all the money he was paid. If everyone is happy with the $25 back, then it works for me. Some guys might come skulking back for something else .... instead he's bragging it up to his buddies how he screwed the boat owner out of $25.

Guess I have been lucky as I have bought and sold right much on CL never had a real problem with anyone buying or selling. When I buy I don't expect any guarantee and
when I sell I make it plain that there are no guarantees of any type.Deal mostly with farm equipment/tractors and farm related so maybe that is a better crowd.

True, but if I didnt have animals roaming around I would have stood firm. Would he do something to them? I don't know, but little comments could be construed as threats and yes I could file charges should something happen. But it won't fix dead livestock. And for $25 it wasn't worth betting the farm on.

You are probably right that nothing would have satisfied that buyer, but my point is twofold:
First, the terms of the deal should be made clear from the start.
Second, it has NOTHING to do with Craig's list. CL is without fault. They simply provided the media for the initial contact. That could have just as well have been the morning paper or the bulletin board at the local supermarket. Presenting it as a CL rant is just plain wrong.

Sodbuster, it appears that you handled it well. If you had taken the advice of the tough-talking gun fighters here, how many of them do you suppose would contribute to your legal fund if you needed to lawyer up after threatening the jerk?

Not many... Probably none, Sad world we live in that one can face legal trouble for defending them self or their property. But none the less it is what it is.
