How's the best way to control moles, try to kill them or kill the grubs or both? Prayers for all those affected by the floods.

ih10020,

I am not a mole expert, however let me tell my tale. We had moles infest our yard, about 2 acres. I tried the professional exterminator with the special poison...did not work. I tried the grub worm spread on my yard...did not work. I tried the gummy worms...did not work. I tried the spikey traps...got one.

I am not a paid advertisement, but I recommend the wire-tek step on traps. I have successfully trapped no less than 61 moles with them, over the course of 5 years. Yes, that number is correct.

Good luck, and good riddance to the moles.

I'm on a well and have no plans to use chemicals. I've good luck using victor traps which I bought at Rural king. I painted mine red and put a bucket next to them so the lawn mower doesn't get them.

This year I've gotten 6 moles in the same mole run between the garage and flower bed.

I don't care if you got all the moles in your yard, their cousin's will come to visit and stay. It's like there is an interstate of roads the moles use. They go deep in dry seasons. They go under roads too. So if your neighbor has moles, you'll get them too.

The victor trap doesn't work well on some soils like stick to your shoes clay that takes forever to dry.

Poison peanuts, grubs and mouse bate use the same neuro toxin that takes days to kill mice and moles.

Trying to get rid of moles is like trying to keep weeds out of a gravel drive. Good luck.

I had a bunch of moles in my one acre yard. This spring I sprayed with Spectracide Triazicide to control bugs and grubs. It got rained in and I have not had any more moles in the yard. However there are still plenty of moles out in the pasture where I haven't sprayed.

I have been using grub killer of one sort or another for probably twenty years. An application seems to last about four years. I have better things to do than to be chasing moles. One of the most effective grub killers is "Milky Spores" but I haven't been able to find it for the last two rounds. It is obviously not a chemical.

I recently discovered a product called "Assault" that comes in a small paper packet. I found it at a farm store in Lebanon, MO and was told the farmers claim it's the best thing since sliced bread for mice AND MOLES! I bought some (it can also be bought on the internet) and tried it in my yard. Just poke a hole in the run, pour 5 or 6 pellets (they look like D-Con only smaller) in the hole, close the hole and it does indeed kill moles. I was amazed. It also kills mice. Great stuff and pretty cheap.

I'll second the Victor mole traps. Been using a couple for the past 30 years.

There is a bit of science in trapping for best results. In my dirt, I pack some into both sides of the mole tunnel. In heavier soil, no need for that. Got to set the trap in a "through tunnel" , not a "side tunnel". Set the trap so the trip lever is level with, or slightly below, the roof of the tunnel. Back fill loosely. Put a bucket over the top and wait a while.

Depending on how active your moles are it sometimes is only 5-10 minutes before you catch one. I have had some go as long as a few days before getting it. Very rare to have a "dry hole".
