Hog Problems

Do y'all have serious...and by serious I mean sounders of hogs numbering 50 or more ruining pastures and crops?
We shoot every hog we see and it hasn't made a dent.

I think it is interesting man has been able to eliminate many beneficial or at least non-harmful species and cannot do the same to harmful or noxious species. As much as I love bacon, the feral hog is destroying vast areas of Texas.

Near Sabine river/Rains/Wood/Van Zant, thick and destructive! Gestation short & large birth numbers, so you can't ever shoot fast enough.

Hog-tight fences (3 foot high woven wire with a strand barbed wire above and at ground level) might be the most effective long term solution.

Had more damage over the winter at my place in Grimes County than ever before. I estimate that I lose 5% of my hay crop due to their tearing up the ground in big patches. Neighbor has a remote controlled trap and his count is over 350, but it doesn't put much of a dent in the problem. There are a lot of woody creek bottoms where they can hide, I hardly ever see them in the daytime.

ss55 I have seen woven wire and welded wire fences with barb wire at ground stretched so tight they sing in a breeze. They get their nose under it
and lift. Even bend cattle panels. If they want in, they will get it.

Fortunately we don't have that problem here in Ohio,,,Yet... but some people brought a few into a Hunt club south of me a few years ago,, and the neighbors made sure they didn't get started...

Tim S - yes if they had gotten loose....every 3 months and 3 weeks a sow will have a litter of 5 to 12 pigs. In a few months those pigs are breeding. A sow could have 3 litters a year.

Here in Leon county. We have talked about having the Army do some target practice. They fly over anyway they might as well drop in for some practice. I deliver feed over the county. I have seen more damage than I would like too. We invited PETA to come take a few. Since they care so much. No one has showed up yet.

I have caught and killed 11 in the last 4 weeks, did not make a dint. I complained to TP&W all they said "we give you permission to kill them". I've written the Governor complaining about the do nothing TP&W. Maybe every one should start writing and let them(Austin) know how we feel.

You have to hunt at night if you go that route, a rifle is not big of a deal, just about any center fire will work. Now the scope is where the money comes in, I did use a thermal scope when I could get out at night. Those scopes are the thing to go with.

Bet the state puts a bounty on them the population will drop quickly!especially here in La.:tell a Cajun it?s good to eat AND he can make money at the same time:wow look out!

My neighbor on the north has a friend with a duster helicopter. They fly the brush lines and bayous flushing hogs out to open and shotgun them with No 1 buckshot. They killed 60 odd in one day.

But an A-10 Warthog would be much more fun to watch!

Feral hogs right? Were they native to North America in some areas? Never heard of them up here in Alberta but I did some Googling .......

"Merrill estimates the province is home to 1,000 wild boars, with the greatest numbers in Lac Ste. Anne County northwest of Edmonton. Originally brought to Alberta from Europe to hunt for sport, the animals escaped from game farms and thrived in the wild."

We could sell tickets. Make a day of it. I use to watch the A-10 fly the range at Ft Hood. Sit on top of Manning moutain and watch the show. Those things are great. I can't believe the Air Force wants to retire all of them.

Why would there be a bounty? All bounties do is drain the funds from whoever is paying for it. They do nothing to actually help control populations because the vast majority of people taking part simply can't kill enough to make a difference.
Helicopter hunts are the way to go. Not cheap, but there's no other way to kill that many hogs per day. Or even close to it.

Have you ever had to actually deal with feral hogs, from your "solution" it doesn't sound like it. They will just stretch, or break just about any kind of wire.

Just spread the rumor that the Confederate Army lived off them during the war of Northern aggression and the politically correct crowd will destroy them.

I think they were brought here by the French when they were exploring the new world..turned loose as piglets as the traveled up the Mississippi..

i have tried for 5 years to find a place to hunt hogs in TX. and everyone wants 500 to a 1000 . stopped and talked to land owners and was told in a lot of cases to get the H of there land. i offered to help with farm work farmed and ran a excavating co. for 45 years but no takers all wanted there 500 to 1000 .offered deer hunting in WI for hogs in TX. no takers

From the people I know. That have land with hogs. Too many people willing to pay.

On the other side.

Too many land owners that have been burned by hunters. Damaged property, stolen equipment, gates left open. Insurance regulations, threat of lawsuits.

Saw video of one attacking police car. The hog chased the cop to the top of his car and then tore the front bumper off it and just about ripped a fender off too. The cop shot his 9MM empty - maybe hit the hog with half the rounds and all the hog did was get mad.

Getting permission to hunt anything on private land is difficult unless you personally know the owner. Lot of reasons of course. On the other hand, I put a NO HUNTING sign in my tool box at the dealership but it didn't stop some from grabbing a tool to work on something they had drug into the shop. Seems they thought my tools were public property since we were a business. Not every one, just the more important ones.

Or you could say those hogs were responsible for the Death of Dale Earnhardt and they wouldn't be one left in the morning :0

They need not complain about the hogs if they want let anyone hunt sounds like they sure are interested in the money though. 500 to 1000 is high .Not unless you can shot as many as you want for that money.

We have the same problem here in Florida. I see hogs on the side of the road just about every morning on my way to work. There is no way we will ever get rid of them. A couple of years ago a friend of mine leased a big piece of land to hunt on and in 2 weeks I shot over 60 hogs. I took vacation that summer and stayed there just about the whole time. In the middle of the day I would pile corn up in the middle of a couple of roads and then go back in the late afternoon and park the big platform buggy about 300 yards away and wait for the hogs to come out. Shot 12 in one evening with a 6.5 Creedmoor. Next morning I would take a loader and scoop them up and bury them. Go back the next day and do it again. Never made a dent in the population. To this day we still go to the lease and just ride through the heavy brush to run them out and see how many we can get in a afternoon.

Bingo.

Everybody in Texas and many other places in the south seem to be whining about how bad the hogs are tearing up thier land and crops and how they can't get even make a dent in the population.

Until... Somebody offers to help with this terrible problem by asking to hunt.

Then suddenly they don't have a hog problem and those porkers are precious endangered species that command at LEAST $500 a day to hunt.

And don't give me some BS about lawsuits and hunter-caused property damage. First off, 99.9995% of these "reports" never happened or the damage was not caused by "hunters" it was caused by tresspassers or poachers without permission.

Any hunter worthy of the name will provide the landowner his name, address, drivers license number, and sign any waiver releasing the landowner from damages in the event of an accident. With all that info in the hands of the landowner, who in his right mind would so much as throw a gum wrapper on the ground? I will also personally show any landowner who allows me to hunt my certificate of liability insurance so should there be any bizzaire circumstance where I would damage property through accident, they would be compensated.

But all this won't get you the time of day in Texas when it comes to this alleged "hog problem" everyone's always whining about.

ey, you whiner, I don't want the hogs or you on my Texas property! Got it?

Gotta agree. A lot of the land owners who yell about the damages caused by pigs are also the ones who what to charge to hunt.

We don't have a pig problem but man you should hear the farmers here yelling about crop damage caused by deer. Don't bother to ask about hunting. They either charge or simply say no all the while demanding the state do something about it.

And liability depends on the state. Some states protect landowners if they allow people to hunt for free but makes them liable if they charge for hunting.

TP&WL have a test station in central Tx. where they are experimenting with ways to control them. I have seen videos of the test sites and the equipment and the testing. I don't think the state could afford to produce enough of those gadgets to do any good. They are here, just not bad just yet. A new lake is going in about 30 miles N of me and once that sucker fills, no doubt we will be inundated as hunters report they are rampart in the area.
