Cow Milking Thing

One never knows what one might find on CL.

Not mine and not associated.

That said, I probably still have a few stanchions around here if anyone needs one.

Less to do with milking than confinement. A neck chain will do the same job. Had those darn things when I started dairying. They were a constant pain in the backside. All of the swivels , eyes and chains were worn out, and mine were old Pedelar stantcions , and you couldn?t buy new parts to repair them, it was always a patch it up job. I finally ripped them all out and put in a head rail, and tied the cows to the rail.

From when I was a kid I remember modern stanchions that were all steel, but also the older ones that were nearly all wood. The old post and beam barn at our current place has a few old what you might call hybrid, that are mostly wood, but the locking mechanism is all steel.

Hi we had about 60 stanchions in our cow barn. They opened at the top to release the cow. They were fastened to a pipe on the top with a chain and on the bottom a ring was set in the concrete, also 3 links of chain. as chains wore out we just replaced them. No big deal.Ed Will Oliver BC

Whenever I see a barn with stanchions in it I have to think that the pilgrims put people in stocks for a punishment. If you want top milk production you need comfortable cows and that does not include stanchions. They are ok if you only milk in the barn but if you keep cows inside all winter like many in the north do they are very hard on cows. Tom

And it looks upside down to me.

I used one just like it this morning... Only I have the swing out with the latch on the top!

Wish I had saved a surcingle from when we were milking (Surge milkers used them, to suspend the milking machine under the cow. I thing the DeLaval milkers just stood over to the side, with a milk line over to the claw). Would have made a good wall ornament, much less awkward than a "cow milking thing".

Dean, when I saw the title, I just knew we were going to get to hear "Milk Cow Blues" by Hank Williams!!
