It sounds like we are from the same area.
I was born in Oelwein in 1959, my dad worked as body man at local cadillac dealer. We moved to Independence when I was 3, he bought a shop there and was self employed for 15 years. That is where I learned to be a mechanic.
My mom's mothers family (Weber) was originally from the place with the "one old grump", forgot the name. Her fathers family (Kremer) was from the Gilbertville area. Both families moved to Independence in the 1920s and bought farms.
My dad was born in Charles City in 1929 when his father worked as a machinist at Hart Parr. His fathers family (Garrelts) was from the hills of Kentucky. His mother (Evans) was from the coal mine area around Scranton PA I guess both families moved a lot. My dads parents moved to LaPlata Missouri after he graduated high school and farmed there
What year where you born in Oelwein?
