I've slung oats/wheat many times for Winter grazing when I had yearlings. It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of the oat seeds were covered to deep to come up. I always went over seed with a field cultivator. Where's he located? I was thinking he moved to Texas

I never saw where he disced it in. Not a chance it will grow if
not covered. The birds would eat it all. I have always disced in
oats. The deeper the better, it has to be in moisture.

I've plowed with a moldboard plow, 1 pass with disc harrow, broadcast oats, then made a final pass with the disc harrow. The results were good, a thick stand came up. This was not for a grain crop. We have also plowed, disc'd, broadcast oats, then run the cultipacker over them for a grain crop. Results were another good stand. The following year we got a JD 8300 series drill and used that to plant. Does not seem hard to get oats to grow around here. I was surprised the wildlife did not take a lot of the seed when we broadcast. One year in my field here, after harvest, they came back strong, some re-grew, other was grain dropped by the combine's grain head. It was enough to harvest as forage, it did head out again, would have produced some grain. Deer loved it, was there during archery season.

This video is the one where he disked it in . It looks a lot better on the second pass he?s hoping for an oat / grass hay crop hoping the oats will thicken his stand up . I wanted to harrow a small hay field last year so rather than mess around moving the harrow I just hooked onto the ih 370 disc that has a harrow mounted to it and then adjusted hitch so the back gang would barely touch and the harrow would drag even the rear gang angle as straight as they would go and barely touching the disc still Killed a lot of grass

I think it will work as long as the seed didn?t get to
deep . It looked pretty good after the second pass
he maybe could have disced it twice then scattered
the oats then disced or harrowed them in

(quoted from post at 09:50:41 05/28/19) He just put the seed in a couple weeks ago . He?s in
Texas somewhere

I think oats planted the 1st to mid May in Texas will not grow well enough to harvest for hay or grain!!!! My neighbors wheat planted last Fall will be ready to harvest in a week or 2.

That?s one thing nice about planting in the fall by the
time you can get on the ground in the spring and
get anything planted the fall crop is a month ahead
of the spring crop sometimes even more

He couldn't get into any fields late last year because it had been just too wet. When he recently disked the first time before he put the seed in it was still too wet in a lot of places.

I realize what you're stating is correct because I've lived in N Texas all my life but sometimes it's better to wait until Fall to plant oats or choose a different seed type or leave oat seed in sack!
