Cheap rear tires

I have a '48 8N that I use for general lite work i.e., grading, firewood hauling, etc. I need to put new 13.6-28 tires on the rear. New tires run roughly $350+ each, except for one. I stumbled across Walmart that sells this size ag tire for $86. I checked twice, and sure enough, it's $86. I can't really afford to spend $700 on a new set of tires, so an $86 tire is pretty appealing. Scary though. Has anyone had any experience with a cheap tire like this? Many thanks in advance for anything you can tell me.

Can you give a little more information on the Walmart tires? I
am in the market as well for my VAC-14 Case.

I dunno. That sounds too cheap. If the price was $250 or something I'd feel more comfortable. However, for that price, if they don't work out you are not out a lot of money.

Here's the link: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Ag-Plus-Tractor-R-1-Bias-Ply-Tread-1900-13-6-28-Farm-Tire/985349754 to the tires I'm looking at.

I should explain that my son sent me this link. When I go to Walmarts website, and search for ag tires though, I can't find them. Don't know why.

Yea, I agree. My concern isn't so much the money as the time it takes to mount and fill them. I'd hate to spend half a day getting them on the tractor only to find all they're good for are baloon animals.

By the way, this price includes shipping to my local Walmart.

Sounds too good to be true.

This this the only 13.6.28 tire I can Find at Walmart
and it?s out of stock

I don't know about the Wal Mart tire and
would guess $86 is a mistake somehow,
somewhere.
Oh, and a 13.6x28" tire is 2, thats TWO
sizes to big for an N series.
They should have 11.2x28" tires on them.

IMHO,in my opinion it is a mis print. No way can a tire of that size be that cheap. If it sounds too good to be true,it probably is. Secondly,13.6 is too big for an 8N. TA 13.6 will set the rear end up too high. It will look funny. You may even experience a noticeable loss of power. Not to mention, the already too fast 1st and reverse gears will be made even faster with that big tire. The biggest is 12.4. 11.2 is the proper size for an 8N.

Yup. My bet is once ordered, Walmart will come back later and cancel the order, as unavailable. But - they'll take your order first, and then cancel it later.

But - worth a try?

This is the right size, and only $106.

But again, I doubt it will be delivered. Most likely cancelled after the order is taken.

Sure enough the link provided by Back Wood brings up the ad.

When I look at those links, they say "ships to San Leandro 1919 Davis St" That address happens to be a Walmart store in San Leandro, CA. San Leandro is in the SF Bay area, just south of Oakland. Who is taking delivery of tractor tires there? At the best, you'll have to pay shipping from CA to wherever you're at. I guess you can drive out to the bay and take delivery! Maybe these tires are coming into the bay area and San Leandro is the closest store to the importer's warehouse, but I really doubt it.

When I click on the link it shows the tires and says it ships to my nearest Walmart and gives the address.I'll check with their customer service to see if its legit, don't seem
possible it is.

I have a like new pair of 11.2x28's on a parts tractor I'd like to sell. But they are mismatched, so maybe best to sell one at a time. It will be interesting to see how your pricing really turns out.

Sounds like they have the wires crossed and confusing the tire size with a lawn mower size tire. Like a 13x6 x28 inch tall tire. This sounds more like what they would be getting you.

If they were real tractor tires, they'd be like that pair of work boots I bought at a flea market one time. I took about 20 steps and the heels were completely gone. Just a bunch of little piles of black dust everywhere I'd stepped.

You'd take off with those tires and it'd look like you unrolled a round bale. LOL

It gets curiouser and curiouser. It appears the tires are Specialty Tires of America "Traxion Cleat R-1". Specialty Tires is a real company that claims to make its tires in the US. But according to their website, they don't make R-1 tires in 11.2-28 or 13.6-28 sizes.

I suppose it's possible Wally World got stuck with a few discontinued tires. But I'm pretty sure big retailers like Walmart insist their suppliers agree to take back unsold merchandise.

I'd be tempted to place an order and see what happens.

I was thinking similarly. Turf tires for mowers or something. But, the description of the tread doesn't jive with the mower turf tires. These are specifically called "AG", so it will be interesting.

My wife went to Walmart talked to a lady at Customer Service, she looked up the tires. The prices quoted are correct, said we could order as many as we wanted and if
we didn't like the looks of the tires when they came in didn't have to take them. They are shipped to the local Walmart for pick up no delivery charge.

I do not think it is actually walmart that is selling the tire. I think it is "ag plus" acting as a seller on the walmart page.

My guess is they made a mistake and will not process the order. But, If I needed any of their tire sizes, I would order a set and see for myself if they were any good, particularly for a tractor that is not
doing much work that would put signifcant stress on the tire.

I'm amazed by the response my tire price question created.

Before I continue, I want to thank everyone for their time and efforts. I can't believe some of you actually went on line and researched this, or spoke to Walmart. I'm hoping I can return the favor one of these days.

The pricing question was one thing, but some of your responses concerning tire size raised another issue for me that I'm hoping to get some feedback on.

I bought my 8N back in 2000 for $150. Needless to say, it needed some TLC. I rebuilt it from the ground up. Since that time its seen a lot of use. Generally its been used to drag large trees out of the woods for firewood, haul rocks, grading, etc. etc. Heavy work, but not farming.

One thing I never dealt with before now were the rear tires. It came with well worn 13.6-28 tires. Since there wasn't much tread, I always ran it with chains. Unfortunately, one of the wheels finally gave out. I then bought two new rims, and since the tires it had were 13.6-28, I bought rims (12-28) for this size tire. I just never questioned the size. Based on some of the comments about 13.6-28 tires being too large, I'm questioning if I'm now stuck with rims that are too big. I'm thinking that the 13s never really gave me a problem, so new ones should work, but then my old tires never had much tread and so aren't the same diameter as new ones will be. Can/shoud I put a smaller tire size on these 12" rims?

Thanks again.

I ordered two 12.4-28 tires. Deliver 5/23
My ticket says FarmKIng. They'll hold them 5 days, if I don't like them they'll send them back.

I really need one, thought I'd order them before they figured out maybe wrong price. Or they run out.

You shouldn't have any trouble if you choose to go with 11.2-28 instead of 13.6-28. If you wanted to split the difference you could go with a 12.4-28.

I'm thinking the main concern with the larger tires will be the clearance between tires and fenders. Since your worn-out 13.6s fit, I'd guess new ones should fit as well.

Your chains might be a bit tight on new 13.6s, or loose on 11.2s. Which shouldn't be too difficult to correct.

After reading your post on Friday i looked up tires for a cub that I have and those 61.00ea delivered to my house. So I ordered a Pair just got a email that they will be here on Monday thanks for the great tip on cheap tires.

I do not need any, but am anxiously awaiting the results from those that have ordered these grossly under market price tires.

Be sure to post back your results.

I bet many others are wondering too.

If you look up the part number from the walmart ad for the 11.2-28 tires on the Speciality Tires of America
website it will take you to the tires in the link below

A lot more lugs than the picture in the walmart ad

Fred

Disclaimer...I had already ordered 2 sets before I found the Speciality tires page...we'll see how they look...supposed to be here next week

Where did you find the listing for tires delivered to your house? I'd sure prefer home delivery rather than having to pick them up at Walmart. Can't wait to hear what you think of them. Lets hope they're not AG tires for a quarter scale toy tractor model :)
