Nitrogen burn

Three days ago I sprayed about three acres of brome grass with a 50/50 mix of 32% and water. I was shooting for about 20 GPA of actual 32% or somewhere in the 60 pound actual nitrogen per acre range. I ended up putting on maybe 100 pounds, it was a very uncalibrated job. Right after I sprayed it we had .45" of rain and this morning we had another quarter inch so it is worked into the soil by now and washed off the leaves. The brome grass is 8" tall, maybe a little taller and about 15%-20% of the leaves are burned.

I know the brome grass will come out of it just fine I am not worried about the damage. What concerns me is the quality of the hay. In the back of my mind I think I read once that a heavy nitrogen application will make the hay toxic but I might be imagining that. What do you guys think? This is for my granddaughter s horses and I sure do not want to make them sick.

I know corn chopped too early (while the plant is still taking up nutrients) and cut too low (highest concentration of nitrogen is in the bottom of the stalk) that the silage
can be toxic to cattle. Don't know if that would be similar in brome grass. The extension office would be your best resource.

The nitrate toxicity is more a function of severe drought stress on corn with very high N rates. I can't see 100 lb N hurting the
grass when its got adequate rain. It will take up the nitrogen as it needs it, and will take it several weeks for that. It may
grow too tall and fall over more, making it fun to cut.

Oats can suck up to much nitrogen and cause
problems grass can and cause problems with cattle
if your worried about it have a sample done on the
hay

The small amount you applied and the timing makes it very unlikely for the hay to have dangerously high nitrate levels. On top of that, horses have a MUCH higher resistance to nitrate toxicity than cattle and sheep.
