Finally got dry enough to work some ground. My grandson Gage came over after school and took his first drive working a field. He did very well.

Going to plant my first seeds tomorrow. Looks like a few days of nice weather, if that holds I should get about done.

I'm pretty sure they lowered the power 10 hp. But the floatation makes up for the other losses. There won't be any pics of me driving it tho. Lol

You should be very proud of your grandson.

He has to be proud of that. I about floated off the tractor the first time I got to disc with a 4020 instead of a Massey 35. On an aside, does he wear hearing protection? My Dad was hard of hearing and never insisted I wear it. Now that i'm middle-aged it is catching up with me. I had my boys always wear ear muffs and the older one reminded me six times to turn off my blinker when we were delivering hay on Saturday. I didn't hear it. Keep that boy on that tractor. BTW-We just sent my wife's cousin back to Cambridge this morning. Watch for a green Ford with a snow plow bracket on the front.

And a wide-brimmed hat! I spent a lot of time on tractors with neither ear protection nor a hat- now hard of hearing, and getting skin cancers cut off my head and face regularly.

lucky kid...dad didn't get the 1030 till I was in the navy..did get to run it for 30 acres when I came home on leave once....
Very nice to see a kid interested in farming

Looks great and brings back memories of myself on a Deere 2510 diesel working ground for the first time. Starting him driving tractor and giving him responsibility will certainly be in his favor for his entire life.I hope to plant corn today as well. Tom

Very nice pictures. Thanks for sharing. It sure brings back memories. I be he had a smile from ear to ear. Now you need to get him a CASE cap.

Jon
Make sure he knows all the safety part of that job

tell him everyday how important it is .
and then the next day tell him again

I was just 13 years old when we moved onto a bigger farm. Big enough that dad needed a hired man. I got the job. Even got a brand new 3020 John Deere to go along with the 4010.

Looks like he's enjoying it.
Now get him into the habit of wearing hearing protection while driving a tractor without a cab, as I'm sure a few members on this site wished they did.

Right on!

Our neighbor thought his 13 year old son was capable of being turned loose with a 4020 John Deere and a 20' disc.

He wasn't. The kid is forever 13 years old.

DITTO!!! Use those dispoable orange plugs AND muffs. Most muffs do not attenuate the low frequency from the exhaust. Those orange plugs knock it way down and the muffs take care of the general volume. IT is boggling how quickly you can screw up your hearing while listening to that really cool sounding exhaust stack talk.

Thanks for sharing these great moments..:)

Both you and your Grandson are very fortunate to have each other....you done well with your Grandson.....:) I would say your Grandson probably likes his Grandfather!

Bob...

At his age my love of farming outweighed all other thoughts....except girls.....girls were quickly gaining on it..
