Question for the pump guys.

I am working on a mid 30's Hercules diesel. So far as I can tell the injection pump had no oil left in it. (Last ran 30 years ago.) About how much oil does the pump hold? There's what I think is a drain plug under the transfer pump, but I can't get the plug out. Also there is a petcock on the side that I am not sure if it is a drain or level.

I did disconnect the drive coupling, and I can turn the pump over by hand. At least some of the plungers are moving.

The diagram in my APE book looks a little different but shows where the fill level ought to be.

What JDEM shows is spot on. Also be aware on most American Bosch APE inline pumps the governor is oiled separately from the pump too. Most used a drain cock for oil level, and a 1/8 inch pipe plug or drain cock for draining. Some also had an overflow tube standpipe that came from below about one inch long with a drip tube to drain off any excess fuel leakage from the plungers.

Thanks for the information guys. I?ll check on the governor too. This is one of those ran when parked situations. Never know what you will find.

If it's like mine just cuz it turns doesn't meen it wont run wide open. Better be ready to shut the air off if you try to start it.
