IH 400 Distributor

The shaft in the distributor on my 400 is quite loose, makes it nearly impossible to set the points and it runs poorly. I assume there is a bushing of some sort on the shaft to hold it in place. Is this something that most anyone can replace or are special tools and skills required? I looked at replacement distributors, and they are pricey. Thanks, Chris

A lot depends on how it is made.

Some have a ball bearing. As long as the bearing hasn't spun on the shaft or in the housing, they are easy to repair.

But most have bushings. Typically the shaft will have some wear, so replacing the bushing won't be a good fix. And most bushings need to be reamed to size, requiring special tools.

Something you might consider, electronic conversion. They don't require a perfect distributor, some wear is acceptable. But, they do need for the centrifugal advance to work, which can usually be cleaned up and lubricated.
