I have a recently overhauled M with the 4 inch stepped pistons. I have been dealing with a worn distributor for a while and would
like to either replace or rebuild to fix the side play on the shaft. I have heard that with some piston styles one needs to back of
the distributor advance.Would that also be the case with my piston setup or would a new 40 degree advance unit work fine. I have
not been able to find any other advance ratings for replacement distributors other than factory.
 
you mean 4'' bore piston, what is the step? have a ''M'' with 5000 altitude pistons in it the advance on the distributor has to work to get your power that tractor is dynoed at 76 hp also have a set of 4'' by 7000 altitude pistons
 
You need a 22 degree advance. Limiting a 40 can be done if you are creative with fabrication. Other distributors that have 22 and fit will work. the tractor vet knows. Jim
 
Ya want the 22 degree plate , yea i know nobody knows what to look for . So start looking for a 400-450 dist. There is not many of us old guys that can recurve a dist any more and not many old dist strobe machines and know how to use one to make the changes to get the timing curve with the correct degrees at give RPM. for proper performance .
 
Ya want to see what ya can get with the 8500 ft, pistons in 4 1/8 with a stock 450 gas head with the 450 intake and exhaust and a blue printed 450 cam and a little tweaking of the timing curve on good gas , it will rival a 806 .
 
If I am understanding you correctly the 400 and 450 came out with a different advance curve built into the distributor and that would be the correct setup for my engine combination. After reading your post I began looking or a new or rebuilt distributor to purchase and am coming up with the same part numbers as the distributors I found for the M. How do I know if I would be getting the correct timing advance that I need? Or am I out of luck getting a new distributor with the 22 degree advance and will need to find a used distributor to rebuild?
 
Probably a crap shoot to get one. I would assume it would not be advertised with an advance specification. I believe you could take a used one from Bates (from the correct tractor) and have a new bushing put in it if it was loose. Sometimes we just make things. Jim
 
Due to the fact this tractor has been in the family since it was new I thankfully know most of the history of how and who worked on it during its life time. In the late 70s my grandfather had the tractor overhauled at the local IH dealership where it had M&W power adder stepped 4 inch bore pistons installed, which I replaced with the same style. One would like to assume that being overhauled at a dealership that the distributor advance issue would have been dealt with at that time. So if I am going to repair a worn distributor the unit on the tractor now would be the cheapest and easiest if one could verify it was a 22 degree setup. Is there a way that I can tell what advance set up the distributor I have is set for? thanks for the information you have given me.
 
Yes. With the cap off of the distributor put a piece of tag board (file folder paper) over the shaft (put a hole in it). Tape the edge of the paper to the outside of the distributor so it won't rotate. Put the rotor back on the shaft pinching the paper behind it. make a mark on the paper where the rotor points. Rotate the rotor in the direction the distributor turns (Clockwise), and make another mark where it stops turning. The difference will be an approximation of the advance. Use a protractor (or print one out from the net) to see the amount. Jim
