OT 2009 ram 3500

my ram truck (6 speed auto) has 145500 miles on it lately when loaded and pulliing a hill the rpm's will bounce between 2000 and 1500, on level ground no problem, if I back off of accelerator no problem, however the speed does not change, it does not run hot, I cant' smell anything burnig. Noting out of the ordinary. Has anyone else had this problem before? What is it? I thought is was torque converter, but don't know. Thanks for your input.

Sounds like torque converter locking and unlocking, or overdrive dropping out when was trans serviced last?

500 RPM change could be the T/C lock up but that is about difference in 5th to 6th gear change too. If you want to verify this, you can manually lockout 6th, in fact I wouldn't use 6th gear when loaded heavy, especially pulling hills. There is still a problem though, as it should not do that.

This really needs the TCM scanned for codes, and/or watch the trans data while driving it. These transmissions are fairly quick to find faults (slippage, shifting or electronic) and will set codes. Some things that can cause symptoms similar to this are TP sensor, brake lamp switch, internal trans electronics, or hydraulic.
