If the tractor is 6 volt, what Jim.ME said (preferably the starter). If the batteries are in series and the tractor is 12 volt, positive to the positive starter lead, and negative to the frame.

If the starter is inaccessible, as with IH 06, 56, and 66 series, because the batteries are in the way:

Find the battery whose + connects to the starter. Connect the + of your jumper cables to the + on this battery. Connect the - to the tractor frame.

You don't want to be producing sparks around especially near the tops of batteries. Therefore, if you make the first connection (if accessible ???) to the INPUT post (NOT post that connects to starter) of a starter solenoid (if tractor has one) orrrrrrrrrr if that's not where you can get to it, to the + battery post that has the big cable leading down to the starter solenoid. Then make the last - jumper connection to iron frame near the starter far away from the batteries .

This if for a NEG ground tractor

The big series tie cable (joins the two 6 volt batteries in series) attaches to the + one battery, the grounded one, and the - of the other. Think of the two sixes in series as a 12 volt battery, first battery has its - to frame ground, then big tie cable from its + to - of the other battery, then the + of the other second battery has the big cable down to starter solenoid.

Same caution applies, you don't want sparks near the top of the truck battery.

Interesting that this is a TRACTOR forum...even has it in the website and forum section names. Yet many times when a tractor is the subject of a thread or question the brand and model of the tractor is held secret as if those viewing a ...tractor... forum would have no idea how that particular machine is configured. Odd? Yes...helpful to provide accurate answer, NO. Just my 2 cents.

used red mn , used green jd 4430 two 6 volt batts wired as 12 volt, jumper cables , red hooked to starter, black hooker to frame five mins tractor started, thanks for the help
