Ot where to order vehicle parts from

Ive always used O'Reilly auto parts for all my automotive part.
The local repair shop told me to order stuff on line to save money.
What sources are reliable?
Heard a lot of people use rock auto.

I have used several. I do a Google search and compare prices. I cant really recommend one over another.
 
I've not found anything better than Rock Auto, so that's what I use. Priced an exhaust manifold for Cummins diesel, $400 at NAPA, $180 at Rock Auto. And the same brand name.
 

Rock Auto has good prices, and I've had no issues over many, many orders.

Shipping can "kill" the deal, though, especially if the order has to be shipped from 2 or 3 warehouses.

You won't know until you fill out the order and see the shipping details.
 
You can still use O'Riley or advance. Just search for the discount code before you order if one doesn't automatically pop up.
 
Buying online can save a lot.

Going to the local auto supply is the same as shopping at a convenience store.

You're paying a premium price for the "I need it now" factor.

If you can plan ahead, you can save a lot over buying from the auto supply.

It pays to shop carefully though. Ordering the wrong part will cost you dearly in return shipping and restock fees.

One thing to watch carefully, online suppliers are sometimes vague about exact fits.

Example, I bought a fuel gauge sending unit for a F350 diesel. Rock auto showed one for all models. It was wrong. Went to the dealer, they needed the VIN. Turned out there were about 5 different part numbers depending on the VIN!
 
I use RA a lot but the as stated the shipping turns the page to local sometimes. I need a steering
gear for my PU, but the core freight means the $50.00 cheaper RA part is not cheap at all.
 
I don't have a problem with rock auto. I use them when I buy my parts now. I purchased new rotors with hubs attached for my 96 Dodge 3500, and brake pads all for under 100.00 including shipping. They had some sort of close out sale. Made in China, but what isn't, unless you go to the dealer. Sran
 

Though I go mainly to my local independent part store, I also use Parts Train occasionally. You can also, rather than go to a particular site, just google the part. You never know what may show up. I have done this a lot looking for parts for an old car that i have been restoring. You can find sources this way that you could never hear of. Another one is Ebay. a lot of smaller vendors use it as a meand of low budget advertising.
 
In addition there is ebay. I've had good luck buying a few miscellaneous parts there. Driveshaft for my Honda CRV was going to be around 1700 from the dealer, paid around $140 for it on eBay with free shipping. So far all the parts have been good fit with the necessary mounting hardware but probably from China if that's a deal killer for you. There has been no additional charge for shipping on any of the parts, probably just factored into the price.
 

RedMF40 save those original CRV axles they are worth there weight in gold. After many a vibration complaints from CRV owners that installed aftermarket CV axles that ended up being the aftermarket axles OEM honda reman axles start to look like a deal...

At this time I re-boot CRV axles no aftermarket replacements for me. The internet is full of vibration complains with CRV after axle replacement... You will see a lot of post with dead ends I can tell you its the aftermarket axle BTDT got the tee shirt...

Once a OEM axle is opened up its a well made CV assy not your standard run of the mill CV axle so I spec that's why they are so expensive... If you got a aftermarket CVR axle that works you are one of the lucky few...

I can not tie up a lift fudgen with RA and waiting weeks for a part that fits... I have to warranty my work and can not tie up the car for weeks waiting for a replacement from RA...
 
Hobo, you are running a business. The
local parts stores want your business,
probably give you a discount, and deliver
too! The cost of the parts is moot to
you, it is passed on to the final
customer. Just how it works in this world.

I have always found that you need time or
money in this world. If you dont have time
you better have $$$. Except lately I dont
seem to have either?

All that said, you have to shop. There are
many online vendors with good prices, and
sometimes the local joints surprise you. I
like buying online for the fact that it
shows up at my door and I dont have to
drive 50 miles to get a part, but most of
my projects dont need to be done in a
hurry.
 
At this time me and Oriley's are on the out's with the quality of the junk they sell. Case in point here , I installed to new C V ft shafts and along with two new wheel bearings in our trusty old 2003 Dodge Durango and shortly there after i had a brake line let go . Ok she is OLD and brake lines do not last for ever . When i got into the brake line it turned into ALL line replacement and while i was under it i saw that the NEW C V shafts had broken boots and they were less then 6 months old and hardly any miles on them , both sides were cracked / broken what ever ya want to call it due to how hard the boots had gotten. When i went to pull them we also found that the new wheel bearings were also toast and the fight was on . What they replaced them with were NOT the same as what o got the first time as now i have to pull the stub shafts and install them into the new JUNK . That was last spring . shortly after i repaired the Durango i went to work on the 2005 Chrysler Sebring that i have been tryen to get rid of and i did and oil change and replaced both ft wheel bearings on it. We don't drive this car much and the one day we did take it on a couple hundred mile round trip i could hear the ft wheel bearing growling and she is just now due for the next oil change with 3600 miles roughly on it since i put them in and have to do it again . Don't use there U jionts as once again tghey will not last in a truck ya may haul with i don't care if you do grease them with the best grease money can by as grease will do nothing for soft crosses as the needles will embed themselfs in the cross .
 
I refuse to buy anything from O'Reilly's. I've has several bad rebuilt starters from them. Dist.caps and rotors last at most 6 months. All mine comes from Rock Auto or NAPA. With the NAPA discount there isn't much difference in price.

I would save them but that's not what I replaced. It was the long driveshaft--the one that gets power to the rear wheels. A little bit of play in the U-joint made it fail our safety inspection.

But I remember opening up the half-shaft end on my Subaru back in the 1980s and putting in a kit that replaced whatever was in there. New boot, too. Is that how you deal with worn CV joints? I was wondering if anyone still did this.
 

Like everyone else I get new replacements but re-boot the CVR axles... Like other parts I had to look around for some decent boots kits I found some at NAPA... On the next one I will check OEM and see what they have...

I got axles from Worldpac they did not work out either even tho they were advertised as OEM manufacture...
 
I have gotten quite a bit from rock auto but I ve had a couple issues. This was partly my fault for not comparing but I got push rods for my 1953 INternational and they were half inch longer. Realized this when I snapped a rocker arm. That was not easy to find.
 
Either I am just lucky or something. I find RA to be rather high compared to my local guy. I also have got so I don't bother with most of the auto parts houses as the kid doesn't know a car from a dozer. If it doesn't come up on his computer screen and fit that exact vehicle he can't find it or wont have it. We have a local guy has been doing parts since I was young and is very good. Has parts from Semi's to cars and can even get a lot of parts for other things. He was originally just semi parts primarily now has had to branch out due to his parts knowledge.
