Plowing in lands

On 80 acres I would cut out about 6 lands

The art of ploughing the 'splits' (or 'feerings' here in Scotland!) and 'finishes' necessary for ploughing in 'lands', has been all but lost with the advent of the reversible plough, which is now ubiquitous in the UK. It remains the real judging criteria for ploughing matches though - see this link.

A standard shaped 80 acre field would be 1320 ft width by 2640 ft length. Plowing in lands works with any size plow.

The field in your drawing is a neat rectangle!!

Some of my fields are shaped like a soup bone. The rest are shaped like an ink blot.

Only ever moldboard plowed a couple times in my life, I'm too young to have been exposed to it much. When I did moldboard plow, my dad got the first few rounds all set for me on a big field and told me to just keep doing what he was doing, so I did. That was probably 25 years ago, and I forgot everything about it. I guess that's sort of how I fit with a soil saver, but I don't make my inner circles shorter each round at the ends, if that makes sense? I just start along one side of the field (soil saver mind you) and head to the other end, drive along the headland 10 or so passes wide, then head straight back down the field. Then just keep on making rounds until that area is done. When it is, I move to the end of the tilled area, and start a new loop section of 10 widths wide or so. Then when I have the entire width worked, make 2 passes down the headlands and it's done. I guess it's sort of close the way that's done, but I never understood the purpose or use of a backfurrow or deadfurrow, or which one was which and where it went.

Pjh that?s why I switched to a rollover plow A lot of fields are shaped like an ink blot . One of my 80 acres fields has about 25 In rock plies it would take forever to try and plow around all those with a one way plow
