Combine Demolition

I hate to see the destruction now but back in 1987 it seemed pretty cool. Definitely lots of noise and excitement as combines popped reverse "wheelies" and sheet metal crumpled. It was the only local combine derby entry I've ever seen. We were discussing them over on Hemmings and I thought the video might be of interest to some here as well. Poor quality as I had to transfer 30 year old VHS to digital. The combines were a Massey 510, I think maybe a 1060 Case, and a really old Oliver with the low mount engine. I was surprised how long that one went.

Rusty I drove by a salvage yard somewhere in southern Saskatchewan that had the combine from the movie Twister. Do you know the location of that yard? The combine was sitting in view of the road and it looked like it had been rolled up in a ball. I traveled from Skoby Montana to Moose Jaw, over to Regina, up to Humboldt, east to Kamsack and south through Yorkton and on down to Portal, and also the reverse of that route. Something tells me it is somewhere in the Humboldt vicinity but it has been awhile. When I was traveling on the harvest I was always so so tired I couldn't think straight and the memory went along with it. LOL

I remember the movie American harvest and the demo derby in it I thought it was cool on tv . It?s honestly probably more enjoyment than most old combines will see most get hauled to scrap and come back in the next life as cheap socket set . You know the difference between an old combine an std ? You can give an std away

I went to one once. I was pretty excited to go,but that thing turned in to the longest drawn out affair I've ever tried to sit through. Two minutes of action, then they gave them 20 minutes to make repairs to keep them going. That happened a couple of times, then twenty minutes turned in to half an hour, and on and on it went. We left several times to go to the rest room, get something to eat, walk the midway, etc. It went on all afternoon with about ten minutes of actual smashing run time.

I?d rather watch golf than a demolition derby of any kind after 5 minutes it?s boring . The last car one I went to was about like you said run five minutes then then spend thirty trying to get them running again and drag the dead ones off

There are a few wreckers in that area but I've only been to the big one at Allan where they have (I think) a Massey 750 way up on a pedastel. I'm sure its visible on google earth street view.
This combine demo went well. Not much down time as there was only one combine heat. Then they continued with the cars after the wreckage had been hauled out. Thats my IH S160 truck doing the towing. It was my brother's truck at the time but I later bought the truck from him and turned it into a water truck. Sadly , he sold the big Braden winch it had on it. It leads a much less exciting life now.

That was a pretty neat video . I wish I had 500 acres I could buy and make the worlds largest combine museum but I can?t save them all

For whatever reason, the witnessing of destruction, mayhem and chaos are built into the DNA of humans. Whether it is combine
demolition or videos of tragic accidents or environmental disasters, humans seem attracted to it and many seem to enjoy it.
Some TV programs are based on it.

What I find disgusting is the hype...$100,000 combines in a destruction derby. Yeah, right- just a bunch of reprobate clunkers just a step away from the junk yard.

There was a combine demo derby at the Farm Progress Show in Lake Crystal MN if I remember correctly around 77- or so. Kind of was fun especially with the little IH with the joystick steering making it around easily.

That would be the IH Model 91. My uncle had one in the 60s... His SIL just sold it last year...was in cherry shape, not used for over 50 years!

It is an annual event in Lind, Washington. They also have pickup races and grain truck races. The farmers wear out a lot of combines in that area where they farm thousands of acres of grain. The ones I have seen have been pieced back together and painted up with fun designs and names. If you loose a header you are out. Grain trucks and pickups are old ones, have seen the same one several years in a row, just somewhat patched up. If you want to see pics you can check out Lind Combine Demolitioni Derby

Don't like them or the car ones either. They destroy machines that were better and newer than what I had to make my living with or for a daily driver.

That combine in the film is or was at Watrous. I drove past that wreckers last friday and there are masses of old school buses outside the gates, but the stuff in the yard looks well picked over.

As an earlier poster mentioned the Twister combine is at Watrous Salvage: http://www.watroussalvage.com/twistercombine.htm
