I finished the spring plowing today

I put this field off to last. It had some real wet spots and very steep on back side. 35 degree slopes and no good way to plow it without having to turn furrows up hill, but the plow is very capable of turning furrows uphill. The side hill hitch actually steers the plow up or down hill the way it is mounded to the main frame of the plow, so the tractor doesn't have to try to force the plow up hill no mater weather I am turning furrows up hill or down hill.
Plowing up the hills was pretty tough. The plow points kept hooking into the ledgrock, and had to stop and raise tail wheel to clear them. often. The front of the tractor was real light pulling the hill and catching the ledges just spun me in. It was quite the dance, controlling everything on the uphill pull.

This is the headland on the south end of the field.

Had a little problem on the lower north end of field when plowing off headland. I got in a wet spot and could not pull away from it. The RH single tire kept sinking. I had to call my cousin and he came down and gave me a tug to pull the front of my tractor back onto the plowed ground.

Pretty wet here and the soil is not forgiving in terms of being worked wet. That did not stop a couple of guys from going spinning the rear tires from end to end. Lots of rainy days in the two week forecast here.

Loren,
Great pics! A nice job to have finished up. Too wet here, so not much going on in our neck of the woods.

Very nice plowing. That moment that the confidence in the next 4 feet of progress goes into the circular file is always depressing. Jim

Congrats on being done. Always satisfying to get ready to plant. All of our fields look like your wet spot and more rain for the next 12 days. At least it's warming up.

Yup, Typical "OH SHI!!" moment. Back when this tractor was new, it would have been a long walk for me all up hill. HeHe. Today I just dialed up my cousin on the phone and sat back with a snack and soda until he arrived to pull me out.

I hung a weight bracket off from a 4850 on the 4020 just for working on the hills I could hang 20 front weights on the front before someone stole 7 weights from me don?t really need all 20 anymore haven?t plowed anything steep enough to need em that and downsized from the 5 bottom semi mount plow to the 3 bottom rollover . A case 4490 would be awfully handy to plow on really steep hills

Good thing you have that rock base, around here you would be axle deep just driving through water in the spring. You sure do a nice job of plowing.

We sold a good number of 2470 and 4490's with that same model plow. We installed Detroit Lockers in both front and rear axles before we sold them, so all 4 wheels had to pull evenly on our hills. The crab steer was out big advantage over the other brands with articulated steering.

We can do that in the fall, but in spring no way. First you would be stuck axle deep, then you would have lumps as hard as rocks. Sometimes we have to when it gets late, then you have to pray for regular rains to soften the lumps and get seed to soil contact. If you do that and it gets dry the crops won't sprout, sometimes for weeks or months. Many times we have had 2 crops of oats, stuff that sprouted at planting and stuff that sprouted later when a rain came. Makes harvest a real bear.

I had an opportunity to buy a pretty fair 4490 I did all the maintenance on it we used it to disk and spread manure had all new 8 tires but it needed front end work and the rear steering didn?t work at all. it?s the right size I?d like to step up to but I was a little nervous about going into debt for a tractor I don?t know much about also I wasn?t sure what it would take to fix the front end and the rear steering so I passed on it. I never knew that the crab steering was a hillside selling feature of these tractors until I got a case brochure on eBay I wish i knew what box it might be in

Boy that plow looks nice. I wish I would never have traded off my Case plow. I do not use a plow anymore but I would sure like to have that case plow sitting in the grass where the Deere plow is now.

He knows his land and how to farm it is why he plows we still plow a lot of ground every year I did about 250 acres last year will probably do another 250 to 300 this year

Mostly chisel around here but still some moldboarding. Beans no till seems to work OK but corn very little no tilled. I have seen lots of fields that you could tell were no tilled to corn that were faliures. When you drive by field and see perhaps one corn stalk per 10' square spot of ground I consider that a failure.
