my brother has a Ford 9N on the grille near the top has a medal madalian that says Ferguson System. Is that an early 9N, i have never seen that before

not necessarily they all had that badge under a patent with Ferguson he developed the modern 3 point that trips its self if it hits say a rock while plowing , before that tractors could flip over and kill the operator you need to look at the engine serial # on the left side of the block by the oil filter or post a pick someone can tell you right away if its early

Not sure about the badging, someone on the Ford N board below will know.

There was an agreement between Ford and Ferguson early on.

Check this out, read the 3rd from last paragraph.
9N

It's my understanding, that Mr. Henry Ford and Mr. Harry Ferguson had an agreement pertaining to who would be compensated for the three point hitch design ( Mr.Harry Ferguson) and whom would be compensated for the Supplying the Tractor ( Mr.Henry Ford).

At some point, Mr. Henry Ford decided that he would supply a tractor and install Mr. Harry Ferguson's patented three point Lift design......as the Atlantic ocean was wide and Mr. Ferguson would never be aware that Mr. Ford was helping himself to Mr. Ferguson three point hitch design.

When the cat got out of the bag and the whole debacle ended up in the world court.

Mr. Ford had to pay Mr. Ferguson a set amount for each three point hitch he used, as well each of Mr. Fords Tractors must be badged FERGUSON SYSTEM as long as Mr. Ford continued to install Mr. Ferguson patented designed lift.

I may be mistaken, but the above is how I interpret the history between Ferguson and Ford.

Bob..Owner operator 1944 Ford 2-N..(Badged FERGUSON SYSTEM)..Tea-20 and MF FE 35 X all with Mr. Ferguson's Three point hitch designed:

It is my understanding and all the 9N that I have seen as well as the 2N have that tag Ferguson system on them. That piece could have gotten removed at some time but if it is a 9 or 2N it has it on orignally. Now the 8N does not as Ford developed their own style of hydrolic lift, that is why the draft control position is on the 8N and not on any 9 or 2N or any Ferguson Tractors. Both my 41 9N and 44 2N bought new by Dad 75 years ago this month hafe that Ferguson System tag on them.

all Ford 9n & 2ns had that "Ferguson System" badge below the "Ford" oval. When the 8n came out, after the dissolution of the "handshake agreement" between Ford and Ferguson in 1947, Ford dropped the Ferguson System emblem.
