Case Tractor/Loader/Backhoe - no serial numbers

I am new to the forum. I recently acquired this working Case Backhoe. It runs pretty well, but I would like to learn more about it for maintenance and finding correct parts. The previous owner purchased parts that sometimes called it a Case 430, sometimes a Case 530, and the owner before that sold it as a Case 240 (!). Any help in identifying it would be greatly appreciated. I have more photos and could take more of specific parts if that would help narrow down the model. Thanks!

Only one model made like that one,, a 1959 420B, I can dispute any other model by a few key items only a 59 400B has,,, it is not a 430 or 530 and no such thing as a Case 240 200B yes but that is not a 210B the utility 200b either

Thank you for the information - so a 1959 Case 420 B, right? That will help when I try to get parts and do maintenance. A friend of mine had given this backhoe to his son-in-law, who drove it into the woods and broke it, tried to fix it, and left it open to the weather for 5+ years. He said I could have it if I could get it to run. I work on old British cars, so he figured I must be nutty enough to try : )

So far I've done some ignition work to get it running, put on a new choke cable, replaced several hydraulic hoses, and replaced the power steering pump. I've also changed the oil and hydraulic fluid.

The engine had ice in #4 piston bore when I first tried to start it. I haven't done a compression test to check the cylinders yet - but it is blowing some exhaust out of the vent on top of the valve cover. The engine once was rebuilt, back in the 1980's and the receipt says they put a used engine block in it from a Case 430. I've added a photo of the serial number on the block - which says "G - 1235" On the cylinder head I think the marking says "C - 1148". From what I read online this is a Case 148 engine, right?

My thought was to check compression in the cylinders and then adjust the valves. I've seen some discussion of that in previous posts, but any links or tips on that process would be helpful. Thanks again for your reply - it's a great help.

Yes they used a 148 cube engine, you can also look up parts and specifications under a 400B same tractor, I added a link to the on-line parts book,, they have recently redone the on-line books,, sadly they know almost Nothing about anything Case these days but it is there sort of,, there was a dsl option but they are very rare, in the last update they only call it a dsl machine ignore that for yours
400B parts link

Do you think it is worth the price to get this manual from Ebay

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Case-420B-W3-Wheel-Loader-Loader-Backhoe-Service-Manual-CA-S-W3-TLB/152576271338?hash=item23864123ea:g:nMEAAOSwVcFXO9E1

It is $115 for the two volume, 603 pages. Seems to show both engine and other mechanical overhaul tasks, like splitting the tractor to work on tranny, etc.

I would be unsure about that one,, a W-3 and a 420B are not the same enough machine to be in the same service manual,, look for a 400B one also any Case CE/Construction can order you the operators manual for the 420B it has most any hyd specs you will need and the Case 400B service manual will give you any spec for the tractor unit, the ops book part number is in one of the pics

(quoted from post at 05:11:25 04/25/19)

I just got the same model of tractor. Your's is in better shape than mine!

Mine runs, but needs a lot of work. I plan on trying to adjust the valves and check the engine - it also has some issues steering which I think relates to heavy rust and lack of grease in the steering gear (kingpins?, Ball Joints?) Also, I have to put the gas tank back on it and get a new battery. But it does run and dig holes : )

Nutty, what is the difference between the 420 and the 320 TLB? To me, his pictures look almost exactly like the 320 I used to have, but, I'm not a Case guy, and it's been probably 8 years or more since I sold it. Is there something that sets it apart distinctly, or just the block numbers? Just curious

David, any chance I could get you to measure the width and distance apart of the front bucket mounting holes? My 420 came w/o the bucket and I'm going to have to fab a mount or find one thats close. Thanks!

Here are some photos - the top bracket has an outside dimension of about 32 inches, the lower bracket about 38 inches, and the side measurement between them is about 12 inches. Hope this helps. I've got my tractor running better and I used it all day today to dig up an old fence around my garden. It worked great!
