Drilling Oats and Centering Plows

Thanks to ACG and CN 1660 for posting the pictures of Drilling Oats. I really enjoyed the pictures. I did some Oats planting but that was usually my Dad's job. Like SV I think he liked the squeaking of the disks as he planted and the somewhat peacefulness that brought to him.

Regarding ACG's response to my question: yes, I find it sad many of these tractor companies got gobbled up and the lineage of their designs were lost. I guess I don't know what parts of the Case designs carried on and what parts got dropped. I felt the Massey Harris tractors, although dated, were better than the Massey Fergusons. But the Ferguson designs won out.

So for centering a plow to the center of a tractor, is it half the plow width or some other formula that moves it to right of center a quarter or third of a bottom. A gentleman on here mentioned that once and I never followed up with him.

On my 3x18" mounted rollover plow I have been centering the plow to the center of the plow and tractor but my draft does not seem as perfect as I would like. Maybe it has something to do with my front tires setting.

I would appreciate some comments on the plow centering part of this post.

Thanks.

Paul

Paul: I have not plowed with a roll over plow in probably 30 years One of the key items was to make sure the wheels were set so the furrow would cut at the correct width in your case that would be 18 inches. Also does your plow have long landsides on the last bottom because of soil conditions? Do you have book for your plow?

Thanks for your response. Yes, I have the book and it has been very helpful. I also have long landsides on the last bottom. I put on new ones just so I knew they were in the condition they needed to be. I am not sure how much wear is to much wear.

I have my rear wheels set at 27", center of tractor to inside sidewall. That seems to give me the 18" cut but my lower links are not well centered to the inner sway stops as I would expect. They are not far off but off maybe an inch or so. My front tires are 29" center to inner wall of the tire.

The book calls for 30" center of tractor to inner wall of the rear tires and fronts at 2" beyond that. I started with the rears at 30" and the fronts at 29" center to inner wall. I was cutting a slice of about 21-22 inches with the first bottom. So, I narrowed the rear to 27. 18" plus 9" is 27" so I went there.

Thanks.

Thanks SV for all your trouble. So it seems my center of load for my 3x18" plow is (3*18")/2 + 18/4 = 27 + 4.5 or 31.5" left of the right furrow wall.

I need to read this a few times and see if I can digest it with regard to my situation.

Thanks again.

Paul
