I want to put a 3 point style backhoe with a hydraulic pump run from my PTO. on my series 600 ford. Will it support that wieght. It will be used more for occasional use.Im not sure how effecient this setup would be. Would it damage the tractor

Depends what size backhoe you are thinking of.

I have a 3pt backhoe on my 5200 or 7700, little bigger deal but I use tractor hydraulics and those tractors don?t pump much volume, so it is a slow deal. Sure beats a
shovel tho.

We had one a while back. Did a lot of work
with it. Was on a 6140 AC. About a 8 ft
hoe. A Oil Co. Bought it new to dig out
pipe line leaks. You need it on a loader
tractor. They are heavy. Found out how
handy one is so sold and got a 480E case
backhoe. So I'm recommending skipping the
first step and moving on to a real
backhoe. Think Case at least a E. They
have a cummins engine.

I had a friend who had a Kelly 3 point backhoe on his Ford Jubilee and he broke the rear end where the center link hooks up. To say the least the 3 point backhoe do work but on a tractor that size there very hard on them. That said I do have an 8N with a Scout brand back hoe on it but it is a frame mount not a 3 point and it work pretty good but if you have to back up much of a hill you do it with the backhoe not reverse gear because it just does have the power to go up hill backwards

A three point backhoe without a sub frame mount is usually a recipe for a cracked transmission housing or destruction to the top link. Occasional and light use may be ok, but you better not hook a stump or rock.

It can be a nice little machine on the back of a 600, just use a little caution.

I've had a sub frame mount on my 100hp AC7000. If I recall it was a 14ft backhoe.
I finally settled in with a Case 580SE.

A friend showed me a pic of his case new holland tractor he used for landscaping business . He said it
was a $4000 lesson why not to add a backhoe. Broke the tractor in half.

Growing up on dairy farm, we had an old 1940's IH H with an old pipe loader. We cracked that tractor in
half too.

Those HF backhoes in my area would at best be a joke due to the rocky soil we have here. The backhoe on my 8N will move a rock that is big enough that the loader on my 841S Ford will not pick up. Or should I say it will pick it up but you cannot move because it lifts one or both of the rear tires off the ground. I have rolled out many rock like that over he years with that scout backhoe

Anything you can do with a 3-pt hitch mounted backhoe on your little Ford tractor you can do faster with
a Compact rubber track excavator. They rent by the hour, or day, or week. Do a search for the charges
on-line. Costs vary by location.

ive got one of those, and ive also ran the big ones and excavators for decades, there's no comparison , now the problems are a 3 point backhoe is there "loose" you cant really brace and dig like you can with a mounted unit, if you have the 3 point all the way up you can, but then your very limited on digging depth , if you lower the hitch then if you get in hard dirt it just lifts the backhoe up, not exactly what you want, the other thing i had was hydraulic pressure, the fords hydraulic system arnt suited to run one, mine came with a pto pump, which wasnt much better you can grab a lever and take 2 or 3 sips of coffee while you wait on something to happen, never mind trying to do multi function moves, what i did was buy the largets hydraulic pump northern tool sold, it wasnt cheap, and i had to make a mount for it, but it does make the backhoe work like you'd expect one to now the thing is better than a shovel, with my injuries i cant use a shovel now, but its just better, not much more

Like everyone said, you really need a subframe, or what I would call a 4 pt mount, that spans to the rear axle and in most cases, connects to the front loader frame via a flange connection. This will handle the stress much better, but by the same token, abusive operation can and will take it's toll. I have an 850 that still has the mount, but the hoe is long gone since before I owned it. The top link pin boss on the rear end has a hairline crack at the base and the loader frame at the flange and near it was broke when I got it. I welded it up, ugly but is very strong with all the heavy things I have picked up with it. With a larger hoe like a Sherman power digger or later ford hoe, they are big and heavy, and that location is where the stress will cause fatigue or failure if someone is abusive.

The photos are of Dearborn mounts that would fit the 600. One could fabricate their own, the one on my 850 is.
I thought of this arrangement, but know from having been a full time operator for 5 years, there is nothing like a dedicated tractor loader backhoe, I currently have a Ford 555, but have operated just about every brand and most models. Without being a braggart, back in the day I was a well regarded young backhoe operator. Having run a few 3 pt models, they are certainly better than a shovel, and definitely are very useful. They are just not anything more than a light duty backhoe, with limitations that dedicated machines do not have.
