No, not field crops, way too wet and cold here for that. Rather, trees. Every year we plant 50 to 100 of these small trees for windbreaks. The land here is an old lake bottom, thus very flat with the remnants of Sandy beaches in spots. This has resulted in many trees cleared from fencelines as fields and farms grew bigger. That resulted in severe wind erosion, so farmers here have adapted no til and minimum tillage plus we relearned the value of windbreaks. We have about 2000 trees planted over the years on the perimeter of both farms, some are now 10 feet tall and starting to show their benefits. Every year we replace the dead ones and extend the windbreaks. In the near future, there may be programs to set aside fragile lands and those spots will likely get trees as well. Now, to the whirlpool bath for those aching muscles!
