Any of you rebuild magnetos or work on them?

At home instead of sending them out? I been at it for many years some success. They frighten some people. Getting parts and testing components are big issues. Just finished two for my antique engines. Yes some can commit you to the asylum quickly.

I do all my own repairs. Even tackled an injection pump once. It even worked when I was done ! lol.
Always amazes me that many will not even think twice and tear into a carb., but will not even tackle a magneto ? Carbs. are a lot more difficult.

I send them out because by the time you pay for the parts it isn?t that much more to have someone do it for you and I don?t have no testing equipment

I rebuild my own magnetos and carbs. I've accumulated quite a few spare units over the years, and parts for the FM and Wicos are somewhat available, so parts haven't been an issue. Around here, we have lost our smart old guys who knew this stuff, but the internet and taking pictures helps. Go for it. unc

I like to work on them as it is a good challenge. It helps that I worked with a guy is an auto. ele shop years ago & now have my own magnet charger & test equipment.

Depends on what magneto. The H 4 used on so many IH tractors wear out the impulse weights and pins and spring gets weak. That makes for poor starting but does not affect running. Should have special magneto grease to repack the bearings also but can get by without. The rotor drive gears and hub get loose but they are available at some after market places. Not so much for impulse parts though.

I used to have a box full of old magnetos at the dealer when they were replaced with battery ignition units and I was always digging in there for the least worn parts to get a magneto going for a customer.

First one I ever disassembled I bent the shaft pressing without removing the proper clips. So I learned to be careful and take my time . I also found that 29 Fairbanks -Morse points are far superior to any aftermarket points .All aftermarket points and condensers must be avoided with mags. Now I have a Sun distributor tester for mags. The more RPM the hotter the spark.
