Texas in Minnesota

These were taken this evening on my back roof (black EPDM membrane) The light tan deposit is Texas red soil deposited with the snow last week. The skid mark one shows it is substantive. I imagine hundreds of tons of particulates in our pink snowfall. The roof is near dead black. Jim

I brought that up last week but the Texas guys came on and said they don't have red dirt. They said it must be from Oklahoma.

pretty odd, amazing how far the wind will carry stuff. i remember my parents talking about the nuclear testing out west in the 1940s and 1950s. a couple days after the tests, the sky took on a red color and the dust, inguess fallout was all over. geez you wonder why so many people are so sick.

Yep, that's a little part of west Texas.

If you can, try to catch as much as possible and return it when you are through.

Just address it to "Midland/Odessa, Texas". They'll know what to do with it.

They lied to you. There is red dirt all over Texas. Down here in Leon county is covered in red dirt. Go out west and is just about all there is.

It blew up here,in the 1950's also, the older generation, told me about it. I talked to guy from around Dumas Texas, he remembered the 1950's but the goverment wanted it tilled to raise wheat back then!!

Jim,
Heres a photo showing the contrast of color... with Texas red soil in the ditch and MN black soil showing through the snow on the field. Pretty amazing difference, I thought.

I snapped it while my husband was driving us to town.

My mom had some land at her house in WV several years back. It covered her van that was parked in the driveway. The Texas dust storm was on the news about 4 days earlier.

I saw that brownish-colored snow here in south-central Minnesota. Before I heard about it coming up from Texas and New Mexico, all I could think of was dust from the numerous limestone quarries in my area.

My part of Texas is Black Dirt.....heavy, wet, sticky clay, both alluvial and calcareous. Here it's about 14-15 foot deep and then you hit some lighter colored clay that fires to earthenware in a kiln.

We have plenty of red dirt here on the farm in NE Texas.

Ever wonder why the Red River, that runs between Texas and Oklahoma, is called the Red River?

The snow was reddish brown here in East-Central Wi. also. The neighbor left his dark blue pickup outside and when the snow melted, it looked just like Janicholson's roof.

Went to a consignment equip auction once to look at a tractor. Pulled the battery covers off and inside was packed with red dust. It went for a bargain price and I did not bid.
