OT: Notre Dame Cathedral

For those of you who have not year heard, Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris is burning to the ground.

How very tragic.

Watching the report on TV now, doesn't look like much will be saved. Apparently was undergoing some multi-million dollar renovations, maybe a contractor caused things to start up. Apparently it started in the attic according to the report I watched. Obviously, there must be an awful lot of wood structure despite it appearing to be made of stone.

Jeffcat ..... lots of posts right on this same page that are not really tractor posts. Why would you pick on Dean's post I wonder? I'd guess that 3 out of every 10 posts on Tractor Talk are not tractor related.

My sentiments exactly, CH.

Post is clearly noted OT, so folks not interested can simply not click.

Look at the column to the left of your screen. That lists all the other features and forums that are on this site. Just hit the Discussion Forums Icon and you will find a whole new world of discussion board options available to you. Your posts are more suited to the Tractor Talers Forum than Tractor Talk.

They might probably save the bell tower. And the rock walls, but how stable they will be is questionable....

Kind of world news, probably a little room on the main tractor page for sharing here imho.

Sorry, but I was unaware of the Tractor Tales forum or, perhaps, forgot about it. I have better things to do with my time than researching other posters history, but to each his own.

You have my permission, indeed, my encouragement, to NOT click on ANY of my posts.

Have a wonderful day.

I agree, Paul.

This is a monumental tragedy.

That said, some folks are unrealistically sensitive or otherwise have nothing better to do with their time so I will henceforth post worthy OT topics in the Tractor Tales topics now that I am aware of it and know how to find it.

Dean

I didn't research your posting history. I am on Classic only and have no idea how to. I happened onto the Ford forum and found several of your posts there. It is a rainy, windy, snowy day here so I am on YT.

The Fire dept could probably have put the fire out if they had been able to get to it quickly enough. The alarm system would have probably been out of service due to the construction, so there would have been a delayed response.

I ignored Tales for years thinking it wasn't worth visiting. For the last year or so I visit regularly, it is a great forum and I enjoy it as much and sometimes better than Tractor Talk. Give it a shot, you'll enjoy it guaranteed. Personally, I could care less about off topic posts on Tractor Talk, no big deal one way or the other really. But more of the Talk crowd should visit Tales I think.

As a Ford enthusiast, I post regularly in the 9/2/8N forum as well as the Ford forum. I also regularly visit the Tools forum as well as Tractor Talks.

I was completely unaware of Tractor Tales until today.

Just one of hundreds of Christian churches being damaged . Too many to be a coincidence.https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/14044/europe-churches-vandalized?fbclid=IwAR2X3MrCrAntKMupqGazw8l44zdRFol6Q_9Cye18w0bY6HAQ5e9xUtCVXnk

Thanks, Hobo, but I'll confine OT posts to Tractor Tales now that I am aware of it.

First thing that I thought too, B & D, but they were working on it.

Things like this tend to be either arson or careless workers.

I'll give mankind the benefit of the doubt in this case, for awhile, at least.

Dean, stay here. I enjoy your posts. Especially the songs. Cant we all just get along? Enough trouble in the US already. We don't need it hear. Stan

(quoted from post at 16:47:32 04/15/19) I would have thought there would be a sprinkler system.

Is originality so important it wasn't allowed?

Steve, I heard on the radio yesterday that the cathedral had been running down hill for many, many years, due to lack of funds. I believe that if the money were available that some sort of sprinkler system could have been installed that would have satisfied the historians, but the French are very secular, so they don't support churches, and the gov't. cannot by law. There most certainly would have been an alarm system but it would have been off due to construction. My church gives me pretty much any money that I need for the upkeep our building.

It's certainly not obvious how to get there (Tractor Tales) at first. I often post off-topic questions here, figuring more folks will see it and answer. My recent skunk question was kind of off topic, but I knew people here would have advice (on how to get a skunk out of a barn w/out shooting a TRACTOR, but that's pushing it). In my opinion, any real "on topic" post here other than the weekly "What tractor should I buy" would fit better in one of the other boards (Ford, JD, etc). So, since [i:654c4848f0]nothing here is really on topic[/i:654c4848f0], why the hate for this particular post?

TLDR: Lighten up, Francis

Although this is a huge loss, it sounds like they managed to save more than I would have thought. The coming years will see the biggest restoration imaginable. (One heck of a tractor restoration!)
