Where to measure PTO shaft diameter?

Hey everyone!

I'm trying to buy an ORC for my 56 Ford 640 to use when I'm brush hogging my field. I want to be sure I buy the correct size to fit my PTO. I know the size is either 1 1/8" or 1 3/8", so I measured my PTO shaft yesterday. My problem is, where do I measure it from? When I measure the round part of the shaft (not including the splines) I get 1 1/8", but when I measure from the top of a spline to the top of the opposite spline, it is 1 3/8". What size PTO shaft do I have?

Thanks!

This little video is more up to date than your tractor probably but watching it tells me that the measurement is made for the shaft diameter
(not the outer edge spline measurement). Lots of results if you Google something like Tractor PTO Sizes Measuring, etc.

Measure the outside of the shaft.

Your tractor is too new by about 15 years to have the 1-1/8" PTO. After the early 1940's 1-3/8" is pretty much the standard.

It's also VERY obvious looking at them side by side. Think, "Wimpy wimpy wimpy! Hefty hefty HEFTY!"

The last Ford that used the 1-1/8 PTO shaft was either the 8N or Jubilee the 640 would have the latter 1-3/8 PTO. Or in other words your tractor has the 1-3/8 PTO shaft

Of course the photos won't post. Well, I went and measured it again and now my measurements seem way off. Spline to Spline i'm getting 1 1/4", and measuring just the round part of the shaft with no splines I'm at 1 1/16".

I bought a JD 503 brush hog for it. Both ends of the telescopic PTO shaft fit on the Fords PTO output shaft, as well as the input shaft of the mower. So I'm going to assume it's 1 3/8"? The JD mower cant be old than the 80s so the input shaft must be 1 3/8". It just sucks because I can't find an ORC anywhere in Canada, tried for months. So instead I have to order it from the states and if it doesn't fit i'll be $100 in the hole.

Yes, My Jubilee has a 1 1/8" PTO shaft.
My 861 has a 1 3/8" PTO shaft.

Should be 1-3/8" x 6 splines.
