Mu tractor was running then stopped and engine died now I can not get the engine to turn over appears engine is stuck someone told me it was the gear is messed up?

If an engine that was running, dies, and then is stuck, it is usually seized up and has internal damage that will require major work. On the other hand, if it died and you tried to restart it, and it is not doing anything, the starter gear maybe jammed against the ring gear. Loosen the starter and listen or feel if the gear on the starter releases from the ring gear. Old starters will have worn teeth and can cause your problem. Re install and try the starter again. If you are lucky, it will start.

There's not enough info in your post to get to the bottom of the whole issue, but ONE thing to check if then engine seems locked when trying the starter... sometimes the starter drive and the flywheel ring gear can get jammed up so the starter and engine are stuck.

With ignition "OFF", vigorously rock tractor back and forth in the highest gear and note if there's any movement of the engine fan indicating that the engine isn't stuck and that will also break the starter gears free IF they've jammed. (Having a couple of football player-sized buddies is an advantage with that!)

You can also loosen the starter mounting bolts, if jammed, they will be under tension and you will notice when they are loose enough that the gears brake free.

Beyond that, there' all sorts of other issues, electrical or mechanical, that could cause the starter not to engage and crank the engine, or the engine could be internally stuck, for many reasons.

will the motor turn with the clutch pushed in? my h had a bearing to come apart in the trans and parts of the old bearing got lodged between two teeth causing the motor to stall and act like it was locked up

just an idea
bass

need a better explanation than that, "then stopped and engine died". thought you are having a funeral for it. lol. did you check the engine oil???

More info is needed, but a pilot bearing came apart in the trans on one of my H's a couple of years ago.

It locked everything up when the clutch was released, but if you depressed the clutch, the tractor would roll and the engine ran normally.

Yes! Before anything else, loosen the starter bolts enough to pull the starter out a little bit. Listen for a click. If you hear that click, then just push the starter back in and tighten the bolts. Should be good to go.

Did it just quit running and then not crank? A starter locking up will not stop engine, that will only happpen if engine is not running and when you go to start and the instant the starter enguages is when it will lock up. So if tractor just stoped while using it then it is not the starter but something else. Will not hurt to pull starter just to make sure while you try the crank to roll the engine over.

I have a similar problem. I have a 1940 H. About two weeks ago, I put in an all new starter. It has been functioning fine.

Tractor was running a bit rough, and I determined it was carb related. I pulled the carb, and gave it a thorough cleaning, and reinstalled. Engine started fine, and was running fine. Before it got hot, I shut it off and tidied up my breather intake, etc., and then was going to start it, let it get hot, and fine tune the carb. Now it will not start.

The starter engages, but the engine will not turn over. I took the starter out and bench tested it - it seems to be functioning fine. When I took it out, I felt the flywheel teeth, and they are there, and seem to be intact. I reinstalled starter - same result.

It seems like the motor is locked up, however that would seem really odd, given that it was just running, and running fine. I keep the oil clean and changed it and the filter maybe 50 to 75 hours of run time ago.

I am a little stumped, but maybe the starter bad. Any suggestions????
