White vs John Deere

Iv always been a White/Oliver guy, but Iv always wanted a 55 series John Deere tractor. What?s some opinions on the better tractor, White 100 vs John Deere 4055 and White 125 vs 4255?

Pretty good tractors either way. I think that by the time of the Whites you list that they were using Cummins engines which should help with parts. Individual history of any tractor you actually are looking at will be key. Neither will be cheap if you have to do extensive repair work. AGCO is all but gone here and worst is the old time White/Oliver mechanics are gone in my area. I could find guys who have their own shop that would have no trouble working on a 55 series Deere.

I always thought the whites were more cheaply and more simpler made than the deeres. Just my personal opinion. I don't own either, but have driven both brands.

Either one could be junk if not taken care of either one could be a really nice . I planted corn with a series 1. 2-135 I think It was an alright tractor the shifting was cheaply done it would be like having a quad range John Deere but instead of any positions for the lever there was just a giant hole the lever sloped around In to try find a gear high on one side low on the other

Parts and service are critical and as years go on the Deere will probably still have parts and service available. There is a reason the White tractors are cheaper, what kind of dealer support will there be in a few years down the road? Resale value will tell you what the market thinks. I would not want to invest serious money in brands backed by AGCO. What looks cheaper today may be a whole lot cheaper down the road.

Better cabs on the Deeres, 15 speed PowerShift on
Deere were hard to beat. Which was the 'better'tractor was the opinion of the buyer

There?s still a lot of old Deere?s running not as many old Whites. Both good tractors and I agree they were better tractors with the Cummins vs a Perkins.

Back when they were new, Deere was overpriced! Both were good when new; But now Deere parts easier to come buy, Service is easier to come by. White/Oliver is cheaper, & easier to work on Yourself. I dont think Agco dealers really care about used tractors, or parts. On the other hand I have a 2013 JD Bush Hog that I cant get correct parts for. Left it with the dealer for a month, & they ordered parts over, & over again, & would not fit. So to this day I do not have a working safety sheild on the PTO Shaft because they cant find one that fits!!!! That happened with a 3 year old mower!

So its a really luck if You ask me!

My guess is you could get more tractor for the money with the White which would swing it for me. I would lean to a 125 or 145. The Deere is a fine tractor, but more money. The 15 spd power shift would be a nicer tranny but the 3 spd power shift in the White likely comparable to a quad range tractor. Cab size is likely a bit larger on the Whites, a SGB is pretty compact. I have driven many of them.

Wet clutch in a Deere quad range vs. dry in a White....Deere has more than 100 cubic inch larger engine for about the same power, less stress on the engine. Deere is also slightly more fuel efficient at most loads according to the Nebraska Tests which are unbiased. As well, the Deere cab was also slightly quieter at most power levels.
It comes down to which gives more bang for the buyer's buck.

You can almost always get a better and bigger tractor for the money buying anything but a JD as the Deere Fanatics are firmly convinced that the Deere is a better tractor and are willing to pay for it even if it is built in India.Green paint and a JD sticker is magic you know.Great situation as far as I'm concerned.

Again you prove you know NOTHING!!!! I was in Waterloo Iowa the other day and went buy some BIG buildings that had big John Deere logos on them. My Son and Son in-law go in those buildings 5 days a week and Deere gives them an pay check for some reason. You never cease to amaze me with your lack of knowledge about most topics!---Tee

IMHO JD 55 series tractors are some of the best tractors JD ever built. I've owned a 4255 since '93 & it has over 10,000 almost trouble free hrs on the speed/hour meter

Plenty of JD tractors these days are built overseas, plus major components are sourced overseas and bolted together here in the USA to skirt manufacturing regulations.I can put
anything on any building. So what? Ever owned something like a 2555 JD? Foreign built, used to come in by the boatload in Baltimore.

In the late 1970's into the very early 1980's both companies and most other tractor manufacturers were running at full capacity and still had buyer waiting lists for new tractors not built yet. Farmers were buying more land and new equipment like there was no tomorrow.

If you are looking at lowest cost to get you in the field than White. If you ever plan to resell, The JD is your bet. I have a 2-135 series III with FWD; I have used the neighbors 4450/55s with FWD. The Deere rides like a dream compared to the short wheel based white. I put axle duals on my tractor just to try and smooth out the choppy ride. This did help a lot. I also filled the front weight rack. The deere tractors don't need help to be a nice ride. Nothing beats the 15 speed power shift hands down. Nothing beats the Cummins for starting and fuel economy. And your point is...? A lot of the utility tractor ,models are built overseas, that does not make them a better or worse machine than anything domestic. Think Toyota or Mercedes....they both have poor and excellent models. As far as a 2555 or any 55 series utility, I would rather that make than almost any other. No tractor is perfect but you do get what you pay for....and JD's higher resale value is for the most part a direct result of the quality of the machine.

I'm sorry-You are right as always! When my Son and Son in-law were hired they only got issued two tools-A nail puller and a wrecking bar-both used for uncrating the new tractors that come out of Waterloo! Just think how big the crate must be to ship a Deere 9620r 4 wheel drive. It weighs over 43000 lbs. so the crate must be built really good-I suggest you stick to driving your cement truck!---Tee

Point is JD is just like every other tractor company, make some good tractors for sure but not any better than any other company overall. But they sell for a lot more comparing the size to other tractors which is fine if you want a JD, if you don't care about the JD Green you can get more bang for your buck with other brands most of the time.

The bloom's going off the rose around here. There was a White Workhorse 125 on an auction here in late February, brought $21,500. Then I stood right there and watched this 8560 four wheel drive sell a week ago Saturday. They said it had been updated to a newer engine for a 9600 combine. They claimed 290 horse. It brought $21,500 too.

Yeah, the demand for those big articulate is off here to. I been toying with the idea of buying a 50 or 55 series Waterloo....they start around 30 grand for some tired old bird with 10000 plus hours. Guess I'll just keep toying! The Whites around here of that vintage hold their value better than most other makes too, which to me speaks of their quality of build and design.

This old big Versatile brought $14250 on the same sale. Updated working air, pretty straight original tractor.

Then the 2-155 White brought $10,200. That had the 478 Hercules instead of the 5.9 Cummins like the Workhorse 125 had.
