Fender skirts and Welding

Some video here of opening up the mail package containing the latest accessories for the Merc. Plus a look at my attempts at wire welding a crack in the hood of the 52 Merc. Yes,I burned a hole through it but was able to fill it in. Got some pin holes in the weld from slag inclusion (flux core wire) but bondo and paint will take care of that.

I would do a little dab of sandblasting on the slag holes in the hood- the slag will eventually migrate through the bondo and bubble the paint.

I'm no body man, but Bondo and holes, of any kind, don't mix. It will eventually fail.

Something that will help with welding thin metal, hold a piece of nonferrous metal on the back side to dissipate heat and support the puddle do it doesn't burn through.

If the area has been ground too thin, don't be afraid to cut out the thin part and weld in a repair section.

It gets easier with practice...

Actually I am afraid to try replacing the metal. I know it looks so easy watching others do it on youtube but I have not attempted it yet. I need to replace a rusted area in the right front fender too but am leaning towards bondo.
My experience has been good using it. I patched the box corners on the 59 IH pickup way back in the late 1970s and that stuff is still hanging in there solid with no further rust.

Fluxcore is good at deep penetration. Makes it hard to do thin stuff. Solid core mig works better.
