Facebook vs Craigslist

Listed a 4 ft Bush Hog and 4 ft boxblade both places. 4-5 " I want the item, I will send payment, shipper will arrive....." From Craigslist. No real buyers. Facebook had 20+ folks ask about each item and sold them for asking price with in 12 hours. This afternoon I'm going to pick up a one row cultivator for 60 bucks off Facebook. Just my results........

I have used both and most recently sold my daughter's Ford Escape on Facebook.

Got lots of bogus hits from CL with stupid lowball offers, PayPal scams, you name it. Not one serious buyer. Facebook on the other hand brought several serious buyers and the 1st one who looked at the car bought it. There was some haggling but very minimal and frankly we got more for the car than we thought we would. Whole process took about a week and she was really happy with the results.

I still look for things on CL but to sell stuff today I think I will stick with FB.

I do not know anybody that is on facebook. I would like to be able to get the messages that the police department and fire department as well as the council on aging put out. When I asked on here how to do it all replys were STAY OFF FACEBOOK, DO NOT try to get on. In a verrey strongstay off of facebook and no one would tell me how to go about getting those goverment messages. Last year I bought a hay rake off of Craigs list 2 days after it was posted for asking price. When picked it up the seller told me they had it listed for 2 months on facebook with no calls. I did not even know something like that could be done. I don't understand why bussiness are just using facebook to advertise as if they are doing that nothing can be found about them. When they were using a web site a search would bring them up. They are loosing bussiness by droping that web site in favor of facebook. I am not interested in the chat part of facebook and even if I did know hoe to get to that facebook market place I would not even look at it. I have bought a lot of machinery over the past several years off of craigs list.

Leroy, you can access Facebook through a web browser on a regular computer if you do not have a smart phone. Create yourself an account, and search for the people or group you would like to get information from. Ie "your town police" once you find the right page you select "follow" the page.

The posts you are interested in will be included in you "news feed" or list of posts the shows up when you open facebook.

People are tired of CL. You search for a specific thing and it puts up a lot of non related items. The ones that do match your search are all so overpriced it is laughable. People still think they can pay absolutely any price at an auction and double their money on CL or eBay.

Markeplace on the other hand has become so crazy popular that I have yet to buy anything on it. Every time I try I get told I am on a "list" and will be contacted if the people above me pass on it. Just had it happen again a few minutes ago and I politely told the guy what he could do with his list. This too shall end.

My son was telling me yesterday that facebook has been working out allot better for buying and selling equipment for his business as opposed to Craigslist. I guess i'm going to have to break down and figure out how to get on board with Facebook. Although I did just sell my 5 ft' tiller and a wood splitter on craigslist with the usual crap that I've come accustomed to you have to put up with on there at times.

Craigslist ahs been taken over by spammers and scammers. Scammers came first with the money order payment schemes. Now the spammers have taken over. Do a multi city search on Searchtempest for "Allis Chalmers" and you will get hundreds of listings for LED lights, etc, etc. So far Facebook hasn't had these problems. As for Facebook, it's just like the rest of the internet. I can use it to interact with decent folk, or the scum of the earth.

About 6 of one and a half dozen of the other as far as I'm concerned.I can't see why where something is advertised would affect the price a seller would ask,I see some of the same stuff
on both.

Yes, please stay away from Facebook. It is evil and will rot your brain.
Besides, the more that use Facebook to buy things, the more expensive they will become.
So stay away, stay away, just stay away, lol

I don?t have a Facebook account, don?t really want one. Most of my friends are about the same.

It sounds like a lot of folk are moving to Facebook. Which means the scammers will move along over just as soon. And the bad sellers that don?t have a clue.

Facebook can have some control on that, but as the scammers get more sofisticated at it, the controls Facebook will need to use will become intrusive.

It will all circle around.

Craig's list is just a classified ad listing. Nothing more, nothing less. Just like the classified ads in your local newspaper. As with any classified advertising, there will be scammers looking to make a dishonest buck off the unsuspecting. Oh, well.

Is CL better than FB? Is FB better than CL? All depends on your perspective. In essence, they are both the same thing. Personal experience can vary from person to person. Anecdotal "evidence" proves nothing.

Due to the ridiculous nonsense that folks posted in the early days of social media, I refuse to participate. I don't care what one poster had for breakfast, how he/she spends his/her day, or what kind of mood they are in today. Could not possibly care less.

Has it gotten any better? Maybe, but I am not interested at this late date. I'll stick with straight up classified ads whether on CL or in the local publications.

I will say that I have found some good deals on hard to find items on CL, eBay, and elsewhere. As the old chief once said, "some days you eat the bear and some days the bear eats you."

Kevin, I need to sell some stuff and may try Facebook. I messaged you this morning and surprised you didn?t respond. I?m not a spambot from NY. Lol

We have had good results buying and selling on both Facebook and Craigslist..I cant say that I prefer one over another...

Just had it happen Mrs jocco listed some stuff for me. On fb market. Got message from a person she grew up with. The came right over and bought it.

I recently got scammed on FB by a guy named Jered Holsinger and gal named Nikki Montgomery for $360.00. I Currently have a claim filed w/ paypal and my card company. BUYER BEWARE on these to POS's. But that has been my only bad experience.

I have never even looked at buying or selling on Facebook. I do have an account but have not been on it in 6-7 months. Got tired of hearing about all the everyday crap people post on Facebook. I do not know how to even look at stuff to buy/sell on Facebook. Might look but more than likely not.

CL can be frustrating at times but in general I have had good luck with it, buying and selling.

I am waiting for the anti-social, social media site. That is the one I would fit into better as I get older. LOL

(quoted from post at 19:21:37 04/14/19) FB marketplace is only way to go to buy / sell locally. Craigslist is dying.
Yes, FB marketplace has an added advantage for me in that some of my friends on there know what I am interested in and will forward me the info if they spot an item they know I'm interested in. That is how I found the 53 Merc. I wasn't even looking but a facebook friend saw it and pointed me in the seller's direction. Great find and great friends. Think I"ve been on FB about ten years now.

Your line, create yourself an acount. ABSOULATY NO WAY SHOULD HAVE TO HAVE AN ACCOUNT TO find that information That is a criminal act to require any information on you to know if the schools has closed because of weather or if a street is closed because of a water main break. Or to find the address of a stor you want to shop at.

The difference being, with CL just anyone can join with nothing more than a generic email address. FB requires ALLLLLL your personal information or you don't get access to Marketplace.

I finally created a FB account last month to get at the Marketplace, with the bare minimum information. Not allowed to use Marketplace. They want me to add "friends" but I'd just assume nobody knows I'm on there.

Anyone still using Searchtempest, STOP. It's garbage. Use CL's own search features. It allows you to filter out the spam by looking at just owner ads, using "negative search terms" to filter out what you do NOT want to see, and lets you add nearby CL sites up to 400 miles away to your searches. Use "bundle duplicates" to lump all the spam from one spammer into a single post, then hide it for the duration by clicking on the X icon. A few minutes up front will have CL looking like it used to, and you don't have to give away all your personal info.

FB buy sell works great for small local items, more apt to sell to a real person instantly.

Don't have CL in Canada, have Kijiji, I have not had any scammers try to buy my stuff yet.

Well as I refuse to give my name, personal info and half my life's story just to have it sold. I guess FB is out. Zuckerberg actaully got called before congress over that. Craigslist is too full of dreamers. Even if I did set up a Facebook account, as was already mentioned it's just a matter of time before the dreamers and scammers make there way over there. The wife has FB account and she's seen plenty of scams on there already. In all honestly after I quit putting my email on Craigslist and refused to answer texts. I can say with a straight face I have not gotten a single scammer contact me off Craigslist. Still gotten a couple low ballers though. Lesson learned. Scammers will never call.

For sure. I shop Kijiji classics every day but have not yet bought anything. I've heard more criticism of craigslist but have no experience using it. Facebook marketplace is easy and entertaining. Scams? Not that I have seen. Its a valuable resource for buyers and sellers.

(quoted from post at 13:04:58 04/14/19) I do not know anybody that is on facebook.

You probably know 100 people that are on FB. Most of the people here or on FB. No, we may not be real active users (I don't even own a smart phone) but we use it. Yes, it's a pain to learn, yes it's geared to millennials. But I find stuff on FB Marketplace a lot easier than on CL, and on FB I can message the seller right then. I don't ahve to go through an email system and hope they respond or call and call and call and never get anyone to pick up.

On Craigs list IF they do not have a way to email either through CL or direct I will normally not respond. Calls only or text only to me they are not interested in selling so I will not bother them. I have bought a lot of items off of CL. And 99.9% of you could never call me as the phone I have takes a special call procediure as it is for hearing impaird but not for the cannot hear at all group as my hearing is not that bad. So unless some one will respond by email I write the add off as no good. And no way does the place the add is placed need to know my bank information or if I even have a bank account. And I want to pay seller directly, not throu an advertiser. Newspapers do not require that information for you to place an add and no private company should be able to require it either. Probably only thing I will be buying any more will just be at flea markets-swap meets.

FB doesn't require your bank info, but ebay does.
I've bought and sold on FB and never had to give them any more info than this or other forums require.
Swap meets are turning into delivery/pick up points for items that are sold on FB.
Besides the FB Marketplace, FB has many (thousands) of groups dedicated to buying, selling, collecting specific types of things....trucks, vintage tractors, collectibles, etc. There are also buy/sell groups for geographic areas.

I've used CL and didn't like it. Waited around to meet buyers that never showed up too many times.

Something will come along to replace FB, but right now it's the place to buy and sell.
